Can any of you clever people work this out? I'm perplexed.

Evening all!

I was just browsing property websites and this listing has stumped me: www.onthemarket.com/details/11871574/

Why would it be sold? Who would buy it? What could you do with it? 🤔

So confused but I imagine that there must be a very obvious answer that i'm missing. DH is also scratching his head.

Whatdya think? 🤔

That looks to me like a test fake listing created to help train new employees, which was posted publicly by mistake.

That's what I think too.

BruceAndNosh · 27/08/2022 21:30

Strange... 2 separate plots of land have recently been listed near me that are equally baffling. Each about 60ft by 15 ft so maybe big enough for a garage, one is £450 the other £750.
They are slap bang in the middle of a field, 200m from thr nearest road with no access!

EverydayIsPJday · 27/08/2022 21:31

Could it be used for putting up a sign for advertising?

fyn · 27/08/2022 21:36

It’s a ransom strip. If in the future the road needs to be changed it could be compulsory purchase the wooded area at a cost. Alternatively if permission was given for developing the field behind, the ransom strip would be valuable for access and a reasonably large payment could be made for access.

Justhereforthis · 27/08/2022 21:37

No idea but I want it!

scoobydoo1971 · 27/08/2022 21:46

Like others have mentioned, could be a fake spoof advert to test IT staff. However, if real, it is possible that the freehold is the grass verges either side of the road. At some stage, the council may have done a compulsory right of way/ purchase order to enable the roundabout to be constructed and a road to go through the land described as for sale. Something similar nearly happened to my family home as a child. The council wanted to flatten the street to make way for a dual carriageway.

Dibbydoos · 27/08/2022 22:00

🤣🤣🤣🤣 see so many of theses sales they make you wonder. Some streets were sold for £21 the other week at auction. They Covenant requires people are given free access etc etc so it's not like you could set up a toll road 🤣😁🤣

LovingLifesHurdles · 27/08/2022 22:01

Looks about the right size for a 5g mast maybe?

PineappleSun · 27/08/2022 22:19

Looks like a wayleave, big land owners have stuff like this all over the place.

hattie43 · 27/08/2022 22:21

The land will surely be bought on a speculative basis as it's on a residential road . Some people buy plots of land in the hope planning rules change in their favour .
People don't buy land to look at so the buyer will have some idea of use

My thoughts exactly.

Mosso · 27/08/2022 22:27

Imagine buying it for a tenner then in a year or so getting an invoice for ££££ to repair potholes Grin

mumda · 27/08/2022 23:10

Legal pack normally explains auction oddities. Can't see one though.

But aren't ransom strips usually retained by the previous owner of a plot of land - why would one be for sale?

Secondchildregret · 27/08/2022 23:17

It won’t sell for a tenner.
look at the royal estates website that is the agent for it, they have all sorts of ‘access’ roads for sale starting at £1!

They’re experts obviously and will be privy to information that would make those ‘access strips’ extremely valuable

TheWayoftheLeaf · 28/08/2022 00:38

Are they able to add a toll booth?

Mumwithsons · 28/08/2022 00:44

Some land comes with responsibilities, so it’s cheap because you have to pay for other stuff. Also land that isn’t useful as there won’t be planning permission or able to farm it.

oneOff12 · 28/08/2022 01:04

Maybe somebody near one of the close houses? Maybe they want to add more trees to create a better noise buffer/ view?

DogInATent · 28/08/2022 01:25

Someone's made an error with the GIS software, it's misplaced on both the satellite view and the plan view as a result of the same error.

The description and postcode both put it on Beech Wood Drive (a residential street) not the bypass. I think it's an odd bit of land between the houses and the verge of the bypass. Someone will buy it as a garden extension.

fyn · 28/08/2022 07:58

@JasmineIndigo ransom strips go up for sale all the time, usually by councils or statutory bodies that want to offload small bits assets of their assets. Investment companies buy them as a gamble that some day they’ll make a profit.
