Energy debt

Hiya, glad I've found this group. So I'm already in debt by about £1400, paying £150 per month. I'm well aware that it's no where near enough, and quite frankly I don't mind being in debt with this energy provider. I'm planning on calling them and setting up some sort of payment plan, where a certain percentage goes towards the debt, and the rest towards usage. However, I will not pay more than £180 per month. I know that the debt will continue to increase, but at least I'll be officially trying to pay it off. What's your opinion on this 'method'?

I can't see that you're in a position of power here because you are still a customer. You can make a proposal, and they may accept it, but it will, I would imagine, be dependent on you limiting your usage within agreed limits AND prices being within expected limits.

So, definitely make your proposal, but be prepared for them to want more, and for a prepayment meter if you can't agree.

Are you on a fixed deal?
Because if you are on a variable tarrif, as of October £180 is unlikely to cover your usage, let alone your debt, unless you make massive reductions in usage.

You will end up with a pre payment meter installed and then have no choice but to pay more than £180 if you still want to use power.

Why would they accept a payment plan that would not reduce the existing debt and would
only increase it 🤔 ?
