Keeping baby warm

Hi all. With the new price cap we have been looking at our bills. We have a 2 month old baby who is currently in a bedside crib with us. He will be 6 months in December so will be going into his own room.

We usually set the central heating to go off at 10pm as we hate a hot bedroom but surely we won't be able to do that with a baby will we? It's going to cost a fortune!! What do other people do? Would an oil filled radiator in his room just for the nighttime work.

Getting very worried about our bills

Baby will be fine. Our heating didn’t work in our bedroom when we had our first DC and I had him in late October - he was in a long sleeve vest, sleep suit, gro bag and sometimes a cellular blanket if it got really cold. It was 9 years ago but I seem to remember something about checking if his chest was warm - if so, they’re fine. I remember holding his hands a lot whilst he fell asleep next to me and his hands were always warm as well so he didn’t even need mittens or anything - if he did, it was because he was accidentally scratching himself and they were built into the sleep suit.

Mine had a vest, baby gro, cardigan if very cold, brushed cotton sheet and a couple of cellular blankets.

Our heating is never on overnight even when the kids were babies. Dress them warmer for night sleep. You get 3.5tog grobags that are suited to cold bedrooms.

He will be absolutely fine OP. Babies fuss when they’re cold and that’s about, overhearing is far more dangerous and less easy to know when it’s happening. If he’s too cold he’ll grumble at you for a thicker tog or another vest on but you’d be surprised at how snug they can be when all bundled up 😊

We hardly had heating on when she was little.
It used to be 13 degrees regularly in the day.
We did have a little portable heater in her room when she was really little in case we ever needed it. We'd put it on sometimes. We chose that room as it was little.
She'd be in 3.5 tog grobag in the winter when it got that cold. She was always a hardy baby with the cold and in fact has always carried on being like that. Refused to wear a coat a lot when she was toddler and out in t-shirt in all weather when she was at school! She's 8 and will still be in shorts when I won't

A couple of generations ago, nobody had central heating, and babies survived!! He will be absolutely fine.

Get a gro egg thermometer for his room and then refer to the grobag temperature chart. You can get 3.5 tog ones that are pretty toasty! I would not have a mobile baby of 6 months + with any type of loose covers. Not only is it dangerous but they probably won’t stay under them!

That's brilliant advice, thanks all. Definitely guilty of being a little PFB so thanks for bringing me back to Earth Grin

He already uses sleeping bags that he loves so will invest in some thicker ones. Jojo maman bebe do 3.5 tog ones with arms; would that be too much do you think (obviously if it was a very cold night). Aware of the risks of over heating

Don't think the ones with arms are supposed to be used for nighttime sleep. You can add more clothing under the grobag though

TakeYourFinalPosition · 27/08/2022 09:09

I’d keep baby in with you. 6 months is the minimum to move them, 12 is recommended but I think most people do somewhere in between… I’d wait for the spring and move baby then. You’ll have a better idea of how baby is doing, and your room will be warmer as you’ll all be in it.

I wouldn’t personally put an oil heater in a room with a baby by themselves. Sleeping bags are always a good shout, although I wouldn’t go mad in buying them, my son loved them at 2 months, was alright with them at 4 months and does not tolerate them at all at 8 months 😅

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 27/08/2022 09:18

Yeah I would layer rather than have the padded arm gro bags. He will definitely let you know if he is too cold.
