How much for a house share in London?

DS is starting uni at London School for Economics on Fleet Street in September. He is in student halls for the first year costing £250 per week (catered). He will have to find private rented next year as uni accommodation is for first year students only.
Does anyone have any idea how much per week a house share in London is likely to be? We are just wondering if it is going to be exorbitantly expensive.

Depends where he wants to live. DS insisted on living very centrally - walking distance from central London uni, so he paid about £230pw excluding bills, food etc. Butr it was a gorgeous flat. I'd have lived there. You could get much cheaper by moving further out. But then have to factor in daily tube fares and occasional late night ubers etc.

Depends how far he is willing to commute from and which area of London (posh vs rough…). £400-600 per month plus bills I’d say.

have a look on Sparerooms and Gumtree.

Thank you all. Sounds like private rented could be cheaper than uni accommodation.

About £800 per month for rent and about £300 per month for bills. He’ll also need a travel card or a bike (get a shit one that won’t be nicked, and a bloody big lock). The further out you live, the cheaper it is. My figures are for zone 2.

It will be a struggle - a London uni is really only affordable for parents who are Londoners themselves (so the student offspring can live at home), or for parents used to paying school fees. That said, I can’t say I know a single LSE graduate who’s not gone on to be a high earner.

Thank you! Let's hope he does get a good job at the end of it. Will make all the hard work worth it.
