Don't like my new job! stick it out for a bit or start looking now?

Anyone else been in this boat? Been in my new job about 6 weeks. There are quite big bits of the job which I don't want and which were not told to me in the interview. The manager is disorganised, not really available to explain things and is putting a lot of responsibility on me (it's not a well paid career type of a job) and the workplace seems unwelcoming and as if a few of them are quite bitchy gossiping about each other. Can't decide whether to stick it out for a bit in case it improves or just to start looking around for something else.

What could improve, and how quickly, that would make you stay? Is there anything positive that makes up for it, even if a long-term view?

If not, I'd start looking now.

No harm in looking around, it can take a while to start a new role. I applied for a job at the Environment Agency it took 4 months to have the interview and another 2 to get all the checks etc done and then I've got to work my own long notice period so will be 11 months from application to start date although thats quite excessive.

Apart from the excessive recruitment methods the EA is meant to be a good employer, its not all sciency jobs either plenty of fully WFH and hybrid WFH adminy type jobs if you are interested its perhaps not somewhere youd think to look.

I would move on asap. Toxic workplace culture can rob your health. Not worth it!

Just look around. It's your right and you're still I probationary period. This period is also for you to decide if something is for you, not just employers.
If it's not a 'career' job then you have nothing to lose other than income. So just stick at it until you have something else!

Thanks for the replies. I need to check about my notice period but it does make sense to start looking around now, I can't see it improving.

This is me - started a role which isn’t really what was advertised, a big part I do not want to do plus weird team structure and atmosphere. However I was going to try and stick it for 6 months then start looking, just as it’s more of a career type role.

I think any prospective employer can respect a quick decision to leave a new job, it's almost easier to explain than after 6 months (which looks like you've not passed your probation), you can say it was a poor fit and you realised quickly and made a decision, you just sound like you know yourself and are decisive.

Thanks CleopatrasBeautifulNose that's a helpful way to look at it

Good luck to you Blackandwhitehorse ! very similar sounding circumstances
