What weight are you vs your BMI weight?

Hi all,

So, I'm 5ft and I'm 8 stone 11lbs. I'm just below the 'overweight' category on my BMI. I've lost weight, as was closer to 9stone 2lbs last month, which would make me overweight.

However, it says I should be about 7.5 stone to be in the middle of my healthy range. I was hoping to get to about 8 stone 6lbs to be honest! So only 5lbs more to go.

I wear a size 8 on top and 10 on bottom, and I'm a pear shape so don't carry much on my belly. I already notice the weight loss and I'm still just under the 8 stone 12lbs 'overweight' category. So I think I'll be skinny if I diet until under 8 stone - I actually don't even think my body would go that low. I was 7.5 stone at 17 years old and haven't been since!

Oh weirdly I was just having this conversation. I’m 5’3 and 9st13. I’m really quite skinny. My diet is horrendous, I work on my feet all day (25k steps is average) and grab a plate of chips or a sandwich. I couldn’t really be slimmer without looking emaciated. But 10st sounds tons. And BMI puts me at the very top end of ‘healthy’.

Until a couple of years ago I was 12 stone and a size 18, on my small frame that made me obese. Dh is 12 stone. He’s properly skinny. Weight is so subjective.

See I find this odd, I am five inches taller than you and weigh less and am in no way 'skinny'. I am slim but honest to god I'm not skinny at all.

Tisforptarmigan · 26/08/2022 14:16

Hi. I'm 7.12 and 5' 2". My BMI is 20.2 and puts me in the healthy range.

However, I would add that I have a small frame (have to buy teen glasses for my teeny head) and I have narrow shoulders and miniscule wrists. I think all of this should be taken into account when looking at weight/bmi.

Dress sizes are meaningless @Womblealongwithme . They have become far more generous over the decades. My wedding dress was a 10 (in the 1980s) and my waist was 24 inches. I can't get it fastened now!

A BMI of 18.5 is considered normal.

Some people have very small frames and bones, but still carry fat.

Let's not start slim-shaming please!

What on earth is 'slim shaming' about my post @AutumnalGlows ? That's a completely inflammatory take on my post and actually pretty offensive.

The poster said 'Oh no' and that her BMI is 18.1. She also called herself skinny fat. I was actually trying to be kind because of how she refers to herself, but sometimes I don't know what the fucking point is on here. There's always someone willfully trying to twist words and make something that it's not.

This is all ethnicity specific as well, (and age-specific as far as I can see from the research). As a middle aged Celt I'm fairly relaxed about my BMI of 24, and only looking to slim down for vanity reasons. But if I were of South or East Asian descent then that weight might have health implications and I'd be thinking more seriously about trying to slim down a notch.

SquirrelCity · 26/08/2022 15:15

The calculator says I should be 52 to 70 kg. I'm 56 kg, BMI 19 and feel really good at this weight. I've been 4kg more and that didn't feel good, sort of sluggish. I've also been 4kg less and that felt terrible too, no energy, hair falling out etc. 56 is my happy weight!

sorrynotathome · 26/08/2022 15:22

I’m 5’3” and 7st 12 ish. BMI around 20 and pear shape. No-one has ever accused me of looking thin, gaunt, unwell, depressed, unhealthy, tired or any of the other stuff that people claim they would be at a healthy weight.

RamblingEclectic · 26/08/2022 15:24

I've a 24.8 BMI. Having spent years at 16-18 BMI due to medical issues, I'm quite happy with that.

A BMI of 18.5 is considered normal

Depends on the calculator - NHS has it as normal, but others put normal starting at 20.

Like anything to do with BMI, it depends on context and less about 'normal' and more the balance of risk factors, with the BMI being just one.

Only looking at BMI, that one is more normal for young adults and it does lower the risk of some conditions, but with age it increases risk factors around other conditions. Entering a pregnancy at that weight raises the risks of pregnancy related and long term health issues if not carefully monitored for nutritional deficiencies. Been there, live with the consequences even now at a higher weight.

It's like how 25-29.9 is largely considered overweight (though I've seen some charts that still have that in normal). It raises the risks of some conditions, but it also lowers the risks of others. Most are more likely to survive a significant physical trauma at 25.5 than 18.5. Bodies are more complicated, charts are always updating and never entirely going to reflect all the factors of reality - though I'm also struggling to see the reality of 18.5 being skinny fat though obviously someone won't look 'toned' without much muscular development.

5'8 with BMI of 20: I have a very narrow frame, do a lot of sport but no boobs or bum so if my BMI is any higher than 21 I look 'chunky': A bmi of 24 or 25 I'd look huge: The range of bmi is very wide so agree that with a pp that unless you are a body builder it's a good general guide allowing for differences is body frame size:

You sound exactly like me, same height etc.
Ive never been overweight, largest I’ve been was a BMI of about 24 and I looked really chubby.
Now with a bmi of 20 I look slim but not “skinny”

GyozaGuiting · 26/08/2022 15:34

Height of 5’ 1” and weigh 50kg, so BMI of 21.2- I wouldn’t say I look especially skinny as I’m very sport so more muscle!

Namechangefail123 · 26/08/2022 15:41

My BMI is just below 26, size 8/6 at 5ft3

Coachwork · 26/08/2022 15:42

41kg BMI 17.8. I look like crap.

LoveBugBride · 26/08/2022 15:59

I am 9st 2 with a bmi of 23.5 and feel particularly heavy and wobbly at the moment. I start to feel better at 8st 10 when I can fit in my clothes better.

My ideal weight is about 8st 7 which would be a bmi of 21.9 at 5ft 2

Hm2020 · 26/08/2022 18:20

Bmi 23.9 need to lose about 9lbs to feel my ideal weight which puts my bmi at 22.4

greentre · 26/08/2022 18:32

I'm reasonably close to the 'underweight' line however when I had my body fat measurements taken I was close to 30% fat which isn't great. (Most of it on my legs).
That's part the reason I pay no attention to BMI and weight.
5ft7 and currently 57kg

TheOrigRights · 26/08/2022 18:36

I'm 5'8" with a BMI of 19
I'm very lean due to genetics and lots of sport.
I wear an 8.

TheOrigRights · 26/08/2022 18:40

I think I could technically put on about 3 stone and still be within the healthy range, but I know for sure that this would not be healthy for me.

Chickydoo · 26/08/2022 18:43

My BMI is 19.5
I'm 5ft 7'
I have a slight frame. I am reasonably happy with my shape for a middle aged woman. I do work hard at it though.

brawhen · 26/08/2022 18:47

I'm 5'1" BMI 23.5. I'd like to lose a few pounds, but tbh my weight has been stable at this since I was at uni (ex pregnancies) so I think this is probably me. I'm fit and active, but I don't look lean. I have wide shoulders & back (36" bust) and a short torso. I just don't have willowy genetics!

Agree it's extra hard to lose weight when you are short - I need to be on under 1200 per day for weeks to see a difference.

KatharinaRosalie · 26/08/2022 18:48

I'm a fitness instructor, in shape, muscular, size 10. BMI says I'm overweight.

ConfusedGin · 26/08/2022 18:56

mistermagpie · 26/08/2022 14:15

See I find this odd, I am five inches taller than you and weigh less and am in no way 'skinny'. I am slim but honest to god I'm not skinny at all.

And I found it interesting too as I'm also 5'3" and 10st10. So BMI of 26.5. Size 10 and relatively happy to stay at just over healthy for the time being.

Partly as I have more muscular legs than average, despite not really being able to do as much exercise as I'd like due to health issues.

But also because 18 months ago I was 16st, BMI of 40 and size 18 so it just shows how the same weight on two people the same height doesn't always look / work the same.

Having been obese for half of my life, I'm quite content to be 'overweight'. Losing much more will mean more loose skin that I can't currently address and probably looking ill, for me.

pastaandpesto · 26/08/2022 19:03

I'm 5"6", 59kg, BMI around 21 I think.

I put weight on around my waist though so I need to be really careful to keep my weight down to stay healthy - my waist to height ratio is only just within the healthy range.

I also have mixed South Asian heritage which is apparently another risk factor.

Fizbosshoes · 26/08/2022 19:05

Im around 4ft 10 and my bmi is 21. I fluctuate between around 7st 2 and 7st 5 but I'd love a 25" waist! My waist is quite large compared to bust and hips as I'm fairly straight up and down. I wear clothes from size 4 (rarely) up to size 10, mostly size 8. I feel I look sort of average so could probably lose a few pounds without looking skinny

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 26/08/2022 19:07

I'm about 11.5 stone and 5ft 8 think my BMI is 24. Something.

I am as healthy as I can be not sure how I could lose more weight tbh. I workout and eat well

I have a 27 inch waist so I don't think I carry far around my organs.

I'm happy with my body

GalactatingGoddess · 26/08/2022 19:25

BMI doesn't work for me.
I'm 5ft3 but gain muscle really easily.
I've been down to 8s13 at my lowest which is apparently a great weight for me but I looked horrific. Lost all curves and a lot of bone and rib cage on show.

I'm best at 10s7/10s10 - however I'm actually 12 stone currently and trying to get a stone it so off!

samthebordercollie · 26/08/2022 19:45

Isn't it healthy to feel your ribs? My vet always tells me it is for my dog. Why isn't it so for humans?
