All the more for these lovely green taxes “to save the pwanet”

CurtainSchmurtain · 26/08/2022 07:56

I’m surprised at the naivety of don’t pay uk?
In other places in Europe unpaid bills are simply taken from your bank account if the funds are there. If the funds are not there, every bank account you hold in that country is frozen, until you pay. It can happen for bills as small as a five euros.
Surely our government will be looking at bringing in this kind of tactic soon enough?

Antarcticant · 26/08/2022 07:56

I'm seriously thinking about turning my electricity off at the mains.

50p per kwh for electricity 😱
That means using an electric oven for an hour costs 2 quid!

I've more or less stopped using my oven for this reason. We've got a small halogen cooker that I use for cooking things like chips or roast chicken. Or if I'm going to put the oven on l fill it with stuff to cook more than one meal at once - e.g. The other day I cooked a roast joint, shepherd's pie, crumble all at once and bunged a few jacket potatoes in alongside to fill up the space.

As people above said he was abused for catastrophizing etc. it got so bad he had to take a break from social media.

I get that but he was being truthful. He didn’t decide to scare people and come up with random high figures, he was right.

Surely it’s better that someone stands up to these people.

He has some influence. Why attack a man in a position to help?

People will fucking die, let’s not sugarcoat this.

comfortablyfrumpy · 26/08/2022 07:59

That should make my electricity about £135 a month (used yo be about £60).

Goodness only knows what my heating oil will be.... no cap on that. I need to fill up but it is still 3 x what it cost this time last year and will only be going one way, I fear. A few months ago it was 6 x.

cakeorwine · 26/08/2022 08:00

For context - in January 22, we paid £109 for gas and electric as a monthly bill on the price cap.

If we use the same amount of electricity and gas in January 23, it would be £334.

So about 3 times more - this is obviously the month with most heating being used as we are home more at Christmas. This is in a small flat. I hate to think what a larger house would cost.

Aishah231 · 26/08/2022 08:02

If the poor energy companies have to raise these rates due to the cost of fuel/war in Russia ( which I don't buy given how much profit they've been making) how do they justify raising the standing charge - that's not about usage. The fact the standing charge has gone up so much means even if we cut right back on usage we're still paying loads more per month.

This is going to be worse than covid. The government acted very quickly then, why not now? I can’t believe the government is doing nothing.
Boris has given up and there’s a fight between two PM candidates.

I can only think the government actually want people to die, some kind of hidden agenda.

Yes, they found the magic money tree to fund lockdowns (furlough, business grants etc) yet this will have more economic impact and possibly deaths.

Would help if there is a captain at the helm right now.

Sporty2022 · 26/08/2022 08:02

Can the government maybe slightly increase tax to fund this? I’d happily pay a few quid a month more in income tax if it can help control bills.

Ducksurprise · 26/08/2022 08:03

Wilma55 · 26/08/2022 07:55

From google.....
According to Ofgem, the average British household has 2.4 people living in it and uses 2,900 kWh of electricity and 12,000 kWh of gas. This works out at 242 kWh of electricity and 1,000 kWh of gas per month. Of course, this is just the average consumption for a household of between 2-3 people.

We are fucked then.

Sporty2022 · 26/08/2022 08:03

I’m January inflation to hit 13%. It gets worse doesn’t it.

AdoraBell · 26/08/2022 08:04

I worry about the effect on the “average” households who won’t be able to use the heating, or buy enough food.

Metabigot · 26/08/2022 08:04

MinervaTerrathorn · 26/08/2022 07:46

I hope so! Turning heating off the second my fix ends in March and hoping rates come down for next winter.

You timed that well with the seasons

Jane1727 · 26/08/2022 08:05

We are already paying higher than the price cap. I am guess that mean paying £600ish a month from October. We will struggle massively but have the ability to cut Virgin etc how will families on minimum wage cope!

Sporty2022 · 26/08/2022 08:05

Government to give targeted help. Pensioners and lower earners.

What about us that don’t qualify for any help because the computer says we earn too much? But we’re low earners.

Stircrazyschoolmum · 26/08/2022 08:06

Is there any data on how gas/electricity use breaks down in a household? Cooking / water heating / kettle / washing machine etc? Would be interesting to see what levers there are to tweak.. I.e is it cheaper to fully load dish washer or wash up by hand? How much does a single washing machine load use? A cynical part of me thinks this is an underhand way to get folk back to office/school… warmer and cheaper!

Whilst I’ve every sympathy for pensioners, families on the breadline and those whose jobs are home based, there are also a heck of a lot of people who put their heating on at 23 plus degrees from September onwards and wander about in T-shirts. From an environmental point of view there is some benefit in becoming more disciplined about wearing jumpers and switching lights off, (my own teens included!) Personally, I feel the government/energy companies should be supporting those truly struggling and not making general payments to all households... if you have a 6 bed detached mansion in the country or a second/third home then good for you, but now you have to finance it..

Christonabike37 · 26/08/2022 08:06

God I don't know we'll find that money. And we're better off than most people I know tbh.

Redqueenheart · 26/08/2022 07:45

I just saw a tweet from a pensioner just who said he was simply going to refuse to pay any of these outrageous utility bills.

His reasoning was that at his age he does not give a damn about being in debt and that it is more important for him not to die of hypothermia and to have enough money to buy food this winter.

I think when even pensioners start to revolt like this it is a sign that people are starting to wake up to this and simply refusing to be be exploited.

The result of this madness if it is not brought back under control by government will be small businesses folding, mass protest and payment strikes.

Ffs don't whatever you do take heed of what a random decides to put on Twitter.

there will be all manner of ludicrous claims about refusing to pay, rioting on the streets, putting a letter bomb through the door of the Energy bosses yada yada.

That pensioner could be a 40 year old bloke for all we know.

now is not the time to listen to or take action based on the rantings on Twitter!

i know, they keep quoting dont help millionaires as the reason not to help all

flowerycurtain · 26/08/2022 08:08

What pisses me off is that we have quite a lot of solar panels that export electric. We are paid 8ppkwh. Someone somewhere is making a killing.

Also, we were thinking of putting in more solar panels. Have been told by WPD they can switch off out solar at any point of too much is being produced. That makes it financially unviable for us. There is battery storage available but it's too expensive.

This is a simple thing the government could be doing noW to help. Why not subside battery storage.

lanbro · 26/08/2022 08:09

Looking at those figures my gas and electric kWh prices will double from what they are now, I'm already on a variable. I'm out of the house most of the day anyway, will use the microwave and air fryer instead of the oven, and have already purchased Oodies and fleecy blankets for everyone.

Fortunately I can afford the increase but I worry so much for those who are already living hand to mouth, the £70ish credit for 5 months isn't going to touch the sides

The only way to regain control is to identify every single way of cutting consumption.

There will be lots of things we can each do, that we have never even thought of - there are plenty of threads on here giving examples and tips of how to economise.

We haven't been used to cutting things right back, but now we have to, and every last one of us is affected. It's worrying and stressful but it's something we have to cope with, no other choice!
