Thanks @CaptainBarbosa @acrobatcaviar i’ve just had a look for my region and paying over 3p over that already so I have no idea 🤷‍♀️ according to that my electric standing charge is at £0.45. I’ve workEd out my new numbers hopefully and should be about £100 more a month or £55 with the government help. Have £400 in credit too so if I split that equally over 12 months (unrealistic) I should be paying an extra £20 per month (fingers crossed)

I’m on a fix where elec is 16p kWh. Nice for now but there’ll be a massive jump when that ends on Jan.

@FloydPepper blimey, how long ago did you fix at that rate??

Liebig · 26/08/2022 15:57

Decent blankets and hot water bottles are more ideal. The electric blankets people go on about cost more to run overall, while wearing a thermal base layer and lying down with a blanket and hot water bottle under it is far more cost effective.

Likewise, using a dehumidifier to add supplemental heat to a room by removing cold inducing water vapour and taking the heat from condensing it and blowing it into the room.

You have absolutely NO IDEA what I have and haven't done. Being obtuse is simply you being a smart arse twat. No other explanation for it.

I HAD and DID work out the useage on my calculator, couldn't quite believe what I was seeing so asked if there was a calculator for me to check.

I didn't need to explain any of that to you. All you needed to do was scroll on by, not be a twat trying to show me up.

All that said, my reasons for wanting to see an online calculator has absolutely NOTHING to do with you.

@Hydrangeatea

the poster only showed themselves up, not you!

I hope this reply is toTooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination - I'm new to MN!
Thanks for your message.
My estimates are fairly on track although I have reduced my consumption in light of this bill and there's is nothing that is much different now to how it was before my husband died. I was on a fixed rate with a company that went bust so I'm now assigned to Octopus on a variable rate. Fixed rate deals are impossible to come by although I was offered one at the start of spring but didn't take it as it was exorbitant and I still know that was the correct decision.
I have fireplaces in the living room, dining room and all of the bedrooms which I only use occasionally but will certainly look to order some wood as I've room to store it in either the shed or greenhouse. And yep, curtains, jumpers and socks are going to be the way forward I think. It's just another sadness and worry I didn't expect when I'm only 58!
Thank you for your suggestions though and I am going to look into them! 🥰

I did something stupid and looked on the DM website that’s reporting that ML is predicting that it’s going to go up to £10,000 per annum. I feel sick now. There’s no way I can afford that along with increased mortgage rates when my fixed rate ends. I would lose everything.

@Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase

TRY not to worry. There's a million 'what ifs' between where we are now & that. MOST reputable places are suggesting decreases at the backend of next year (slow ones I imagine!!). DM is best avoided/ignored!

economise where you can, be sensible with spending etc & hope for the best.

if it did ever go to that, the country would collapse!

I've just turned our oven off at the wall after getting an air fryer. It's brilliant. We got an 8L one with two drawers and that's ample for a family of 4 IMO. It took me 10 mins to bake some cupcakes the other day - in my oven that would have been 10 mins to preheat and then 20 mins to bake.

@Hugasauras which brand/model did you get? I'm still sitting on the fence!

Hugasauras · 26/08/2022 16:09

I got a Daewoo 8L dual zone one. I've only had it about a week but have used it for quite a few things and it's really good!

FourTeaFallOut · 26/08/2022 11:20

"you really can't see why that's a SHIT idea??"

A warm heated room with the windows closed to pack in the elderly to keep them war ..like a covid party for the most vulnerable?

@FourTeaFallOut

Jesus Christ, I was so incensed at the whole bloody energy crisis, then some nutter suggesting dragging the elderly out, mild winter, to sit in a warm room for a few hours, only then to have to make their way home to a cold, dark house. That covid hadn't crossed my mind!! Yep, let's do our very very best to remove the elderly! One way or the other!

gatehouseoffleet · 26/08/2022 16:25

I've just looked at my bill and I pay just over £200 standing charge for dual fuel. I don't think that will increase that much, although I may have looked at the wrong figures from October.

All the media coverage of the price cap is a bit annoying, what you actually need to know is the new unit prices, then you can compare with last winter's usage and find out what you will pay for the same consumption; then see if there's anywhere you can save. The price cap doesn't help as it is based on average consumption and most of us aren't average - or even if we are for one fuel, might not be for the other.

gatehouseoffleet · 26/08/2022 16:30

hopeishere · 26/08/2022 07:32

Also doesn't apply in NI so we're even more fucked.

Is this because the Assembly isn't sitting? Get onto the DUP and tell them to stop playing silly wotsits then.

I think when houses start burning down because people are using candles and primus stoves the government will be forced to do something.
Sadly people will die in house fires.

I’ve asked my parents to live with us in the coldest months to save on their bills.

NC4TPost · 26/08/2022 11:56

I don't know whether to contact BG about my latest electricity bill because I am sure it's being miscalculated. I seriously don't understand it (other than costs going up).

I NEVER have the heating on - not because I can't afford it (well, I can't now, either way) but because I live in a flat and I'm a naturally hot person, even in Winter. Since moving in just under a year ago, I've had the heating on TWICE - once: to test that it was working for about 30 seconds and the second occasion: for about 30 minutes when I had covid and was absolutely shivering cold. I am not exaggerating, these are the only two instances I have ever put the heating on.

I live by myself, so it's not like there are multiple devices using up electric all at the same time (apart from things like fridge, etc). I don't have a dishwasher or tumbledryer, just a washing machine that I use only when necessary (again, single person by myself so it's not constantly on) and always wash on an eco wash.

My quarterly bill has gone from £164.33 to £615.67. The average usage according to my bill today is 4262.37KWH at a standing charge of £51.520p per day. Comparing averages online, that's apparently the same cost for a detached or semi detached house with a full family. Mine is a one bedroomed flat I live in by myself.

In comparison, my gas has only risen £55.38 to £67.53 quarterly so I can't understand why the electric bill is so astronomically high. I previously asked them to come out and check it's working properly when the bill seemed higher than usual in the past but there was an outcall charge which I couldn't afford at the time so I left it.

Does that sound normal to anybody else? Would you call someone out to check it by those figures? Please, if anybody reads this, please reply.

(Please be kind if this is a stupid thing to ask, this is my first experience with this. I've only ever lived in hostels and supported accommodation before and I've never had to deal with bills like this and I don't know whether it's right or not.)

@NC4TPost

Take a few deep breaths.

your bills are calculated on what you actually USE. Your DD (direct debits) are calculated on what they estimate you will use. How many kW Have you actually USED since you've lived there?

I presume you're on a standard variable rate & not a fixed tariff. (do you have a paper bill?).

the daily standing charge doesn't change depending on how much you use. It's a fixed charge.

ok, that's more than enough for you to digest for now!

tonicwaters · 26/08/2022 16:47

There WILL be Government intervention, I have no doubt about that. When or to what extent I don't know, but seriously, if they found billions to fund furlough and other supports "to keep the economy going" during Covid, they will find it for this.

The impact will be so bad for the economy that those Tories who are wealthy because of the value of their shares in various industries and services etc. will make sure of it. The charges some are talking about are just unsustainable and totally unrealistic for the vast majority of people.

VaccineSticker · 26/08/2022 16:51

It’s way cheaper and safer to switch to Led light bulbs than using candles.
Please please please don’t use candles.

CaveMum · 26/08/2022 16:58

We fixed in August 2021 and currently paying 19.57p per unit for electric and 4.08p per unit for gas. That deal comes to an end on 31st October so we’re looking at a massive jump. I’ve done a back of the napkin calculation and based on our usage in January 2022 if we use the same amount of gas/electric our bill is going to jump from £170 to £620 based on todays figures.

We’re already strict on things like lights/appliances being left on (all LED bulbs), heating/hot water is always on a timer and thermostats set to 20C around the house. The house is 10 years old and very well insulated - we’re often melting in the summer as the house just holds on to the heat!

I’m going to set the thermostats a degree or two lower and reduce the amount of time the heating is on each day in the winter (currently 2 hours in the morning when we all get up and get ready for school/work then 4 hours in the late afternoon/evening when we all get back and until bedtime). I don’t think there are many other areas we can make significant backs in.

MrsLauraM · 26/08/2022 17:04

It means based on typical domestic consumption values with a direct debit payment method. So for electricity the typical usage would be 2,900 kWh per year and for gas it would be 12,000 mWh per year.

DustinsHat · 26/08/2022 17:05

Asda do a 13.5 tog duvet for £8 for a double (single and king also available), I have one on my bed, a good investment for this winter for those who won't be able to put the heating on.

Does anyone know what the "average household" means?

Two adults and two kids in a 3 bed semi at 1200 sq ft? Or 4 bed detached? Or two adults in a 2 bed?

My previous post was in response to this…

Under is better as heat rises.

ivykaty44 · 26/08/2022 17:07

I have found out today that one of the best ways to save gas - from a heating engineer - is to have thermostats on each and every radiator. To save money turn off all the radiators in rooms where you are not sitting.

Head phones and laptops for watching different programs in the lounge all together and turn off the bedroom radiators

if you turn off half the radiators in your half you will only use half the gas
