Do you allow your teenage dc to vape at home?

I have an older teenager who has discovered vaping (never smoked) and I don’t particularly want them to smoke in the house or in their room in case it smells.

I don’t know anything about vaping so I don’t know if it’s the norm to vape openly at home or if the smell lingers or if there are any other disadvantages (apart from it’s costly which I do know.)

Do you or your dc vape at home and how do you find it?

No I don't. I found some in my daughter's room a while back and gave her a massive lecture. I hope she doesn't but to be honest I hope she vapes rather than smokes . Her old brother who lives with his girlfriend smokes weed . Would much prefer she vaped than smoked that garbage.

The smell doesn't seem to hang around and cling like the smell or tobacco.

My teenager doesn't vape, I think if they did I would encourage them to do it in the garden mainly to hopefully reduce the amount they are doing it.

I am going to discourage it but not sure if it should be a blanket ban.

Anyone I know who vapes does it outside, whether in their own home or if visiting others. I have never actually been in someone's home when they have been vaping indoors.

If any of my family decided to take up vaping I would expect them to do the same out of consideration for the rest of the family.

FrecklesMalone · 25/08/2022 18:18

No. Firstly it makes them think it's ok, which it isn't. There isn't nearly enough data to say it's safe and the early research is worrying. Secondly, the particulates it produces longer so allowing it indoors is allowing more air pollution in your house this will affect everyone. Thirdly it smells skanky!

FrecklesMalone · 25/08/2022 18:19

Linger not longer

Hell no would I allow vaping in my home. There is so little know I wouldn’t want it being done in my home.

obviously you can’t stop her vaping if she is really determined to. I’d just ask her to do so outside. I’d hope that would make it less easy and less normalised.

MintJulia · 25/08/2022 18:32

Absolutely not.

My young teen ds doesn't have a job and he wouldn't get any pocket money at all if he was going to waste it on vaping/smoking.

When he's older, if he earns his own money, he can do it in the street, not even in my garden - rain, snow, - I don't care. I'd be horrified at him being so stupid.

Nat6999 · 25/08/2022 18:32

I vape & it leaves an oily film on surfaces, it can also set smoke alarms off

badbaduncle · 25/08/2022 18:36

No, and I threw away a vape I found. It was her friends and I told him I'd still have chucked it if I'd have known!

Greengreengrassofhome01 · 25/08/2022 18:36

Oh that makes me feel better. It’s a no!

Yes I do. I like my girls and want them to feel comfortable at home.

I don’t want them going out just so they can vape.

it actually smells nice but like all nicotine is horribly addictive.

I was on 20 B&H a day at their ages (15&17) so I’m picking my battles xx

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 25/08/2022 19:35

I have never smoked nor vaped and would not expect my DD to either. It would be a house rule like no swearing and I would treat a vape the same way I would treat cigarettes and they would be destroyed and put straight in the bin.

Vaping has already been linked to lots of different lung injuries including 'popcorn' lung where the bronchioles become scarred. OP I would do some research into them if I were you so that you can help educate your teen. There was an older teen in America who required a double lung transplant, rare and research is ongoing but Im glad to see youve said you wouldnt allow it.

I teach about smoking and vaping during our Healthy Lifestyle unit, most teens think vaping is fine and safe, it smells nice, is cheap and comes in nice colours. I've even caught teens vaping in class, they never tried that with cigarettes.

Greengreengrassofhome01 · 25/08/2022 19:42

My instinct was to say no but I don’t know anybody who vapes or smokes and it’s something that’s passed me by for some reason. I will look into it as I didn't know the health risks were so extreme.

I'd say no, and discourage it, although as a teen smoker it's very difficult to stop it! Allow it in the garden as otherwise you'll drive it underground.

I was surprised on holiday how many teen vapid around their parents, one girl seemed to be only around 12! It's better than them smoking I suppose although the longterm effects are yet to be seen
