Breast Clinic Appointment Today - handhold anyone?

Hi everyone, I have an urgent breast clinic referral appointment for today at 3pm. Since my GP appointment (two weeks yesterday) I've been getting progressively more anxious and for the past few nights haven't been sleeping.

I'm 36 and about a month ago woke up on the morning whilst rubbing a lump I must have found in my sleep on the underside of my left breast. Initially I dismissed it as hormonal but couldn't shake the feeling so made a GP appointment.

It feels large ish to me, feels smooth but a bit flat and does move away from my fingers when I press on it. I haven't touched it for a few days as it's making me more anxious. It's not painful.

Today is the day and I'm terrified. I have a young family and I'm so emotional. If anyone can share experiences / distractions I'd be so grateful. Will I know what's going on by the end of the day or have to wait for more results?

Thanks all for the supportive messages - I have now seen the consultant and he said I will get a phone call in two weeks, not one, so going to try an lad keep myself busy for a while

@MrsNobodyMM I would take reassurance that if they said it looks like a fibroadenoma that’s what it is. I’ve lost count of how many I’ve had - 7/8. They biopsy them every time just as procedure.

Go home and have as relaxed an evening as you can. You prob feel a bit shaky after the biopsy if your weren’t expecting it. Do your best put the worry aside as in my experience looking at it on the ultrasound they are pretty definite what they are seeing.

Hempy · 25/08/2022 17:39

Sorry you didn't get a definitive result today but they are just being absolutely certain that it's what they think it is. I had a cancer check recently and the doctor was pretty certain I was okay but just to be on the safe side I had further tests on her advice - just in case I was in the very very small minority who had something more serious that the initial test didn't catch.

Belt and braces MrsNobody - I would be reassured by what the Dr said today.🌷

Hiya, I get my biopsy results next Wednesday..the waiting has been the hardest thing, luckily I'm on holiday keeping myself busy in the mean time, I've been working really hard not to think about it. The only thing told to me by the specialist nurse at the beginning was it didn't feel like a cyst and if it was they'd tell me and drain it ( they didn't). Can't fault them though, they were all so lovely in there, looked after very well.

It's hard not to over think it, but try not to, easier said than done I know x

Hi @Chocolateismyfavourite sorry to hear you are enduring the uncertainty too, I hope you have a positive outcome, sending lots of good wishes.

Hi, they can tell loads from the ultrasound. I've seen my cancer from the ultrasound and they could spot it - it wasn't huge, tell the shape and the location. It had a very definite look to it so if he says it is the fibro thingy and they are just double checking then highly likely that is what it is. Honestly, worrying gets you nowhere so just settle in and give in to a bit of numbness about it. Its highly likely not to be cancer so try not to worry. If it is an unwelcome visitor, you have caught it very quickly. Waiting for results was worse than any treatment.

CormoranStrike · 25/08/2022 19:24

My lumps were biopsied too - take comfort in the fact they are being thorough.

I never got bad news after all the tests.

Chocolateismyfavourite · 26/08/2022 08:19

MrsNobodyMM thank you. You to, though I'm sure like the others have said, they wouldn't have said it looked like something if it didn't.

JustDanceAddict · 26/08/2022 08:27

I had this a couple of months ago inc a biopsy as they ‘had to be sure’ - it was a recall after a mammogram so totally unexpected. All was fine although the week wait for results was torture. And they hadn’t come through by the appointment time so had to wait! They were all
lovely there though / I took dh for the result appointment in case it was bad news.

OoglyMoogly · 26/08/2022 08:55

It's horrible waiting for the results. Thinking of you.

MrsNobodyMM · 27/08/2022 17:24

In case anyone is still following - I have a small update.

During the chat with the consultant he asked if I wanted to come back for a face to face or a phone call with the results. I asked for a phone call.

I've just received a text with a link to an NHS portal with a letter from the breast clinic saying "your appointment has been changed from face to face and can be conducted by telephone" for next Thursday morning. I'm not sure if they have the results yet (48 hours post biopsy?) or if this is just as a result of me asking for a telephone appointment during my last appointment.

Could biopsy results be back so quickly?

A lot of information can be got from the ultrasound such as size, margins etc but a biopsy is always worthwhile just to be certain. It's possible it could be ready by Thursday but 2 weeks is more common. Hope all is okay for you. Try to keep occupied, easier said that done, I'm sure.

Chocolateismyfavourite · 27/08/2022 17:59

I rang and asked if I could have my results over the phone before I went away, they said they don't give them over the phone, only face to face. I guess it's different for different areas?

JustDanceAddict · 27/08/2022 18:01

Mine were back in a week

MrsNobodyMM · 08/09/2022 11:31

Updating this thread in case anyone finds it in the future and wants to know the outcome. Had the telephone appointment this morning saying the biopsy confirmed it's a benign fibroadenoma and nothing to worry about. So relieved.
