Going on holiday with four children …

We’ve only ever gone in villas before and are currently trying to book our first holiday in a hotel now the DC are a little older
But I’m really struggling with the room situation - no websites seem to really break down how the rooms work
They say things like ‘family room’ ‘deluxe room’ ‘standard room’ but don’t go on to tell me how many beds in each and what combination of beds?!

If you have 4 DC what rooms are you generally given in hotels?

I have three DC (grown up now) and would book two interconnecting rooms or a family size suite which is the more expensive option.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 24/08/2022 14:09

Booking.com will give you a breakdown of how many beds per room etc.

Or you could call the hotel and ask?

Littlepaws18 · 24/08/2022 14:10

We have this exact problem, 4 kids and want one room/ apartment. In the end because we were getting nowhere online I went into TUI travel agents on the high street and was given the options, (there wasn't many!) but in the end we managed to get a two bedroom we apartment all inclusive that fits 6, for a week next year.

We just got back from mexico but have been all over. We book via Airbnb as have equipped houses, usually beach stuff you can use. As many rooms and beds as you like and most of the time much cheaper

Mexico you say? A great favourite with MN.

🤔

All websites whow how the rooms work. They all say how many beds are in the room.

I don't think you're looking properly.

Notplayingball · 24/08/2022 14:31

I have four DC. Went on holiday in the UK this year. One double room and two twin rooms. It worked out well. Two older kids shared, youngest two shared.

Try to find a choice of hotels for a family of six on any of the major websites and then come back with your pearls of wisdom!

divide one adult per room with 2 kids each. it's different in USA where even a 2 person room is actually 2 double beds so can squeeze 4 people in one room, but in Europe I find the breakdown is stated like PP said

QueSyrahSyrah · 24/08/2022 19:52

Hotel rooms to sleep a family of 6 are like finding chicken's teeth.

Your best bet would be interconnecting rooms that each sleep 3, or an Aparthotel that has units with 2 bedrooms plus a sofa bed.

If you can tell us where you're thinking of people may be able to make specific recommendations.

QueSyrahSyrah · 24/08/2022 19:55

Ps.. Be warned that by taking two interconnecting rooms or a bigger family room you'll generally be charged for 4 adults and 2 children. You may need to actually search for that to find appropriate options if you're booking your hotel separately to your travel.

I'm yet to come across a hotel who'll give 4 child discounts with only 2 adults.

TopGolfer · 24/08/2022 20:10

Yes but you do end up with two bathrooms, double the wardrobe space and more chance of getting a good nights sleep.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 24/08/2022 20:21

I only have 2 but they need separate beds so even that's is hard to establish. I'm a big fan of jet2 packages as their website is reasonably clear but sometimes I look on the hotel's website, read trip advisor or check booking.com for clarity on the bed situation. I have looked for 2 adults and 4 children on jet 2 holidays and there are lots of possibilities, from family rooms to. 2 bed apartments that all. sleep up to 6.

ChimneyPot · 24/08/2022 20:27

We have 4 children and I always check booking.com or the hotels own website for bed details.
I would rather stay at home though than share a family room with the 6 of us for more than a night!
Always interconnecting rooms or now they are older just separate rooms.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 24/08/2022 21:23

We always booked a double and two twins. We'd ask for nearby rooms but ours were sensible lads so didn't worry if they weren't right next door or connecting.

I have a family of six and just made a booking yesterday. It couldn't have been easier

disconnecteddrifter · 25/08/2022 01:46

Lol @viques yes! Fuck mm. We just got back from mexico. Went to cancun, tulum, oaxaca, puerto escondido and puerto vallata. Wtf? Anyway it wax great - preferred the West Side. And Airbnb. Had a house each time. Near the beach in the beach places. Lush

What do you mean? It’ll probably take two family rooms.

5zeds · 25/08/2022 01:49

Just phone the hotel.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 25/08/2022 06:12

I have 4DC. I always book two rooms, 1 adult 2 kids in each room. When we get there generally the three oldest go in the one room and me DH and the youngest go in the other.

these are usually standard double rooms as they’re often cheaper than family rooms.

chuffoff · 28/08/2022 09:00

Have a look for apartment hotels. They might be best fit for you. I'm currently on hols in one with 4 kids, it's got two double bedrooms and a lounge with two sofas that convert to beds. All that said, I massively regret not booking a villa now. I thought it would be more relaxing not having to cook and clean but it's actually more stressful having to get us all out while the cleaners want to come in (and we're having a lazy morning) and there have been times where it would've been easier to make our own lunch and chill for a bit back on balcony rather than go out.

AyBeeCee · 28/08/2022 09:35

I don't have 4 children, but I often find when booking hotels online I have to put the configuration in as 1 adult and 1 child in each room as it won't let me put 2 children in a room with no adult.

Booking.com usually show configuration and you can put family room into the filter. You should be able to find hotels that have 3 or 4 bedded rooms that way but for purposes of booking allocate 1 adult per room.
