Is it at all possible for a sugar addict to lose weight?

As in the title really. I am a sugar addict.

Chocolate, cake, ice cream, toffees, biscuits, bakes, you name it. And it won’t just be one biscuit or one square of dark chocolate that will sate the urge!

It’s funny in a way because apart from the sugar side of things, I eat really healthily. I love fruit and veg, have reasonable portions, all that jazz.

Is there any hope to rehabilitate myself off sugar?

Eat sugar free sweets. They have a laxative effect which will put you off.

You need to go cold turkey for a while then reintroduce it moderately.
I've got such a sweet tooth but I limit myself how much i have and I'm under 8 stone.

Diabetes is more of a worry than weight!

I know what you mean, it does get easier. I have an options hot choc everyday which eases my cravings and I really look forward to it.
Sweet tea & coffees help too

I'd try Davinas '5 weeks to sugar free' book - on the basis that on her Instagram feed she looks amazing!

I thought, or was hoping, that there might be tons of posters coming on to say they’d cracked it, but perhaps it isn’t that easy a habit to beat after all!

I don't consider myself to be a sugar addict because over the years I've weaned myself off high sugar items such as Pepsi and chocolate. I replaced those with home baked cakes etc and fruit which has left me needing to lose a stone. For the last week, I've had no sugar bar a few pieces of fruit - it's been really hard, but I've not baked and am limiting fruit. I don't think there's a quick fix unless you don't need to lose weight and can replace sugary foods with savoury. I'm sure it'll be easier after a few weeks, but these early days are not easy..

I cut sugar out 8 weeks ago and I'll be honest, I'm still craving it, especially cake. I went cold turkey, cutting out all processed sugars and aiming for as low carb as possible. I'm still eating fruit and I've been having a lot of salads - weird how sweet peppers taste now I'm not eating biscuits and cakes. It doesn't come easily to me as I've a huge sweet tooth, but I've lost over a stone and I do feel much better for it.

Are you a sugar addict or could it actually be binge eating disorder? If so, following an approach for that might work better for you.

Solosunrise · 24/08/2022 14:37

I cracked it by going cold turkey. Felt utterly rubbish, as if I had flu, for about a week. Ive fallen of the wagon a few times, and have learnt that like an alcoholic, I can't have 'just the one'.
What I did in the meantime was to fill up on healthy fats - no living on salads. So I very definitely wasn't hungry. Eggs, full fat greek yoghurt, meat (if you eat meat) Cream in my coffee.

I've got control over what I eat now, instead of food controlling me, and feel healthier and happier.

I read this after I'd quit sugar, and found it helpful. There is a hypnosis element to the book so you have to read it cover to cover. Apparently it reduces the cold turkey side effects (a friend recommended it)

Cold turkey is the key. After a couple of weeks you won’t miss sugar and if you do have something sugary it will taste horrible. And you start noticing the more subtle sweetness of non sugary food like rice and bread.
