MOVING SHOULD I MOVE TO KENT DEVON CORNISH COAST

reddevilchris2018 · 23/08/2022 19:03

I've asked this question numerous times and my aim is to be by the coast, i know there can be issue's with some coastal towns, but it's where I want to be....

my budget is £375k, need 3 bedrooms and somewhere im either walkable distance to the beach or a very short bus ride no more than 10 mins,

Ive been looking at the kent coast birchington margate ramsgate, as well as Devon , Torquay but read some worrying things about the area, Brixham looks and sounds lovely.

As for the Cornish coast im open to idea's but need to be within 1hr 30 mins of truro hospital as I dont drive,

so please please if you live in any of these area's your help and advice would be so appreciated

thank you
chris 🙂

Don't come to Devon or Cornwall if you're reliant on public transport.

I waited 1h45m the other week in Cornwall for a bus into Plymouth. 6 should have come through in that time, not one appeared. The bus stop ticker said they were all on the way. Several were marked as cancelled on the website but only after they were due.

This is our normal here. So are 4hr waits for ambulances even if you are in cardiac arrest. 20hr+ for anything else.

I think if you need hospital access and public transport, Cornwall/Devon should be avoided. They are beautiful areas but (in)famously struggling in the public services dept.

How is a thread with a rude shouty title and a couple of posts in clasics already, what am I missing Shock

Torbays main towns are all well served and connected by public transport.

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 23/08/2022 19:30

I DON'T KNOW THEY ARE ALL LOVELY PERSONALLY I WOULD GO FOR DEVON JIST BECAUSE I love that part of the world and its roughly in the middle. Good luck with it all, I hope you find something perfect for you.

You're going to need somewhere with access to a Mexican house thief, penis beaker and some glue.

springlike · 23/08/2022 23:02

Can only vouch for Birchington (as I live there, right by the beach) Love it and don't think I'll ever want to move away 😊All depends on what you need to be near and whether the location works for you. Good luck deciding!

Have had similar experiences travelling in the opposite direction, especially Stagecoach. GWR can also be delayed, rescheduled or just too full during the holiday season, and affected by bad weather in winter.

Don't come to Devon or Cornwall if you're reliant on public transport.

I come from this part of the workld and there's a reason everyone starts to learn to drive ASAP. You just can't explore properly and it's a nightmare to meet up with people or make plans because the public transport is crap!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 23/08/2022 23:47

Devon!
Though I’m biased…
Torquay has real issues with deprivation- have a look at Exmouth and Sidmouth?

katscamel · 24/08/2022 01:48

Birchington is nice though very small, nice beach. Margate has one of the main hospitals in that part of Kent, a decent beach and a venue for bands and DJs if you want that. Town itself is run down and has been on the regeneration list for years. Regular buses to other parts of Thanet and Canterbury as well as fast train to St Pancras.
Herne Bay could be worth a look. Nice pier, town has the 'basics' but nothing special, regular bus to Whitstable and Canterbury.
Also have a look at Folkestone and Deal (though less transport links in the latter).

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 24/08/2022 05:57

Devon and Cornwall are lovely, but you may struggle there without a car. People do mange not driving, but if you’re used to the public transport in a city then it’ll likely be a shock. were in the south west and people here mostly learn to drive at 17.

Mollymalone123 · 24/08/2022 06:03

no to Torquay-huge drug problem.
exmouth is ok.sidmouth is v expensive-well anywhere with a sea view will be!

PhoebusItMeansSunGod · 24/08/2022 06:04

Not being funny but with climate change in the mix I would not be planning a move to a coastal area.

Kezzie200 · 24/08/2022 06:56

Many areas of East Cornwall use Plymouth hospitals and, I suspect, North East Cornwall may well use Barnstaple. So don't assume cornish postcode = Treliske.

Don't come here reliant on public transport.

Do you have a particular reason for wanting a beach? It matters as you won't be surfing anytime soon on our beach, dogs are banned, but you can sea swim and there's a big group that do. You may be able to walk there but make sure you can do the things you want when you get there.

Oldrockingchair · 24/08/2022 07:15

Another one who says don’t move to the West Country if you can’t drive. And Torbay area is a shithole.
