What have you got outside your front door?!

Looking for ideas to replace my dearly departed potted yucca (I think it’s a yucca - something large and spiky anyway).

Any suggestions please? Pictures welcome too :)

@ErrolTheDragon what’s a sweet box?

A range of potted plants. I’m not sure what all of them are, whether they like the direct sunlight the steps get, how often they need to be watered or whether they should all actually be in entirely different parts of the garden. The hebe seems to go through cycles of blooming followed by looking dead. I’m not sure the “whatever looks nice at the garden centre” approach is entirely successful.

Sarcococca.
It has small but wonderfully fragrant flowers in late winter/early spring.

ConsuelaHammock · 23/08/2022 00:24

Yellow roses.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 23/08/2022 00:33

Wisteria on the front of the house, 2 olive trees outside the double doors, an iron door mat thing and autumn wreaths on the doors

DinosaursEatMan · 23/08/2022 00:35

Some cobwebs and the car. The back garden is lovely, but you’d have no idea looking at the front!

Of course - thank you! I was thinking of the cardboard type of box, not the plant.

Just a mat. Am waiting to dig up front grass and get soil put in and sister going to help me choose plants that will not need a lot of attention as most of the grass to the side and too hard to manage as grows so fast and weeds. When get it all done will get 2 nice potted plants for each side of door and hopefully the front garden will look nice then. Will do the back also is small but want to do a corner with trellis and plants and a small fountain and few solar lights just a nice relaxing space to sit. Have to keep some grass for the dog though which is horrible in winter months with the heavy rain and mud. Can't wait to get it all done and should have funds soon. Some lovely ideas here.

I forget the actual name of them, but the small trees they sell as tiny potted Christmas trees. In half barrels. I put lights on them at chrustmas. There's a load of daffodil bulbs in them too, which look lovely in season, but they drain the nutrients from the soil and the wee trees look really awful this time of year, the look so by Christmas then we repeat the saga again... I need to get some feed to prevent the daffs killing the trees. I need to get new pots as well as the barrels are falling apart.

plus a boring mat.

A forest of giant Echiums. I started off with three plants that a friend gave me, they self seeded and now with successive mild winters it’s a jungle out there. I’ve had people knock on the door and ask what ‘the triffids’ are.

Dishh · 23/08/2022 06:35

Spiders and a large fake goanna to frighten off cold callers. (It works!)

Sorry, OP. We don't get visitors to our front door infrequently so we don't worry about keeping it maintained. If I was to put anything there, it would be a plant that looks after itself. I do have a Chinese star jasmine close by that I planted by a column and, years later, I'm always finding birds' nests in it.

A big pile of logs and two Belfast sinks with dead plants in.

yikesanotherbooboo · 23/08/2022 06:40

About 20 pots with herbs, tomatoes, hydrangea , lavender,a couple of perennials and several pots of pelargoniums which will soon be replanted with tulips. Also .at least one pair of muddy boots, various receptacles to collect rain water, a small bin which houses 'dog' cloths accumulating for washing and a larger bin with logs.

ShaunaTheSheep · 23/08/2022 06:40

A planter full of herbs (it's sunny and easier to get to than the back garden)
A trough of red pelargoniums.
Virginia creeper taking over the fence.
An acer, roses, and spring bulbs in the bed.

I always plant up pots with flowers - in the spring with lobelia and begonias this year, then it the Autumn with bulbs, a small evergreen and some bibs for springtime, miniature daffy. Love my flowers. But has taken a fair bit of watering this year

Perfectlystill · 23/08/2022 07:07

Your lavender is amazing @ItsnotaHenryMoore

Huge lavender in a chimney pot.

Wow - that is the best pot size to lavender ratio I have ever seen!

Adversity · 23/08/2022 07:12

Two square terracotta planters with an olive tree in each pot, the actual doorstep is the original black and white tiled 1920’s one.

A statue of a Greek goddess. Inherited from DM.

Musicalmistress · 23/08/2022 07:28

Nothing but neighbours have a large, multilayer, blue, Chinese pagoda-esque bird bath 🤷🏼‍♀️

tealandteal · 23/08/2022 07:31

Hanging baskets which at the moment have cherry tomatoes in, which DS loves.

RoseMartha · 23/08/2022 07:45

Nothing as the deeds state we cannot.

ItsnotaHenryMoore · 23/08/2022 10:24

I inherited it about 6 years ago, I think its roots have gone into the concrete. Majestic in full bloom!
