£75 of electricity this month!

Just got our energy bill for this month, which is based on readings so is accurate. We have used £75 of electricity this month, on top of the standing charges.

That is bonkers! It's the middle of Summer with long days so lights not needed so much, been drying clothes outside. We haven't used the tumble dryer.
We do have an electric oven and hob but haven't been cooking any banquets lately!
The dishwasher does go on daily.

We're extremely fortunate that we can manage the increased costs but its left me shocked to think of what the price is going to be in Winter, even though I have kept aware of price cap etc so knew what increases were coming.

I think seeing £75 of electricity in August when we have been conscious of making sure lights are switched off etc, the reality of the situation is really stark.

I grew up with my parents being really skint when we were kids, despite working long hours, which is partly why I have stayed living in a cheap house (the terrace me and DH bought when first moving in together) and only had one child. The thought of not been able to afford the bills like my parents has always terrified me so have stayed in a situation where we are more comfortable financially.

Thankfully we can manage the increased costa but I worry somewhat about my Mum and sister. And I could cry for some of my son's classmates whose families are already struggling.

I can only imagine how worried some people are right now.

@Paranoidandroidmarvin - we dry towels in dryer in winter as they take ages to dry indoors otherwise and would leave house damp. Plus they stay soft. Bedding also because I would have to hang over doors making it a constant mess
All clothing gets hung up on rack.

We were away for 3 weeks in Spain this month and have a smart metre bill of £96. Happy days but how the heck have we used that much when house empty!!!?

Totally weird! 🤔 we went away for 2 weeks and only used standing charge for each day.

I've been away for 3 weeks this august, only home for about 5 days. And yes my eon app still says an average of 4kwh a day, lowest day 2kwh, highest 7.

That seems weird to me, when the only big user of energy when I'm away is the fridge. It's not huge, not an American style one just a normal fridge freezer, and I read that the average use is 1 to 1.4 kWh for fridges.

I have one lightbulb on when I'm away, and a few things that keep the clock on (microwave and cooker) so might use small amounts of electricity. Otherwise things are on standby (printer, hoover, tv, computer) or plugged in but off (washing machine/drier, a few lamps, fans etc)

Does this sound right? It's between 140 and 160 kWh per month normally for a single person in a one bed flat (heating separate) but I have no electric shower, wash clothes rarely, etc.

So what is using energy while I'm away?!

QuattroFromagio · 23/08/2022 17:16

(I have a smart meter but no indoor display or can't use that to help, and eon doesn't give me readings broken down to individual days, though clearly it has that info if it reads the meter every 30 min. They told me I could buy an in home display for £50 but I can't see that I'm likely to save £50 having one, as I'm not a huge user of energy. I would like to know where it's all going though in case there are some simple changes!!)

I only use dish washer every other day and only do 1 load of washing a week and 1 load of tumble during (there's only 2 of us so that helps) mine are around £57 a month at moment - and I air fry and use microwave and hob mainly- oven maybe twice a week max

@pelo is that per month or across the year?

Yearly. I've fixed. £200pm DD up from my (cheap) £60pm
But still likely to be cheaper than the variable by next Jan
