How much would you pay for a stick of rock?

I'm tired, I can't do Google anymore.
I own a sweet shop in a tourist location, we're looking at getting custom sticks of rock made - you know the stuff, big sugar tube with writing inside.
Tourist area is quite "high end"
DH thinks £2 a stick, but that seems extortionate to me - but then most places cost at least £1 per stick wholesale...
(15cm x 3cm ish)

It's the kind of item kids buy as a souvenir/with their pocket money.
I bought a stick in Anglesey yesterday, it was 60p! But I think £1 is fine. £2 is too much.

I wouldn’t pay more than £1 for a stick that size. That’s at places like Blackpool though so hardly high end :)

Thesearmsofmine · 22/08/2022 20:38

For that size £1 is right. Cheap enough for people to buy without thinking twice.

Tbh I was thinking even a quid is too much. My kids grab a couple bags each to take home to their friends when we’re away. I’m trying to think how many’s in them now, I’m sure it’s something like 5 for a quid. Those ones are a bit slimmer than the standard size though

Butterbean9 · 22/08/2022 20:38

I recently paid £2 in a gift shop, I thought it was a bit much.

Blackdiame · 22/08/2022 20:40

Surely you'd base it on how much it costs for your supplier to make

Hellocatshome · 22/08/2022 20:40

The big fat ones (trying to picture 3cm) I would say £1, the thinner ones 50p. Although surely more to the point is how much do they cost per stick for you to buy, how much are your overheads etc. No point selling them for a loss.

FlimFlamJimJams · 22/08/2022 20:49

Very poor research on my part are showing starting costs at 60p per stick (when delivery is taken into account) - and that's buying 1,000 of the buggers

I would have thought £2?

How much do you usually mark your products up by?

Fantina · 22/08/2022 20:53

My children like buying rock but I’m a mean mum and hate letting them eat it. They rarely ask for it once we’ve brought it home so it languishes in the cupboard. I’d probably buy any other kind of sweet treat than rock. Sorry, that’s probably not helpful.

Bananarama21 · 22/08/2022 20:53

Can get 3 for a 1 of the small ones different flavours from our local seaside.

Choconut · 22/08/2022 20:56

How about £1.50? Seems much more reasonable than £2 which I wouldn't pay.

Sobaridiot · 22/08/2022 21:03

Tourists are idiots though (myself included - just paid €2 for a chubby chub lolly)

I'd have thought £2 would be reasonable in a touristy area for a custom stick of rock.

This is the worst answer but anything from 20% to 500%
We have packet sweets that are as low as 20-40%, to things like coffee that is cheap as anything to produce.

Obviously rock would be closer to the packet sweets

£1

Hellocatshome · 22/08/2022 21:13

In that case I would probably start at £1 and see how well they sell. You won't really be getting many regular customers buying rock so you can always out the price up later without it causing too much of a problem.
