Working as a Bank Receptionist for NHS? What does Bank mean?

I've never really come across Bank working with the NHS before, but I've been asked to attend an interview as a Bank Receptionist at my local hospital. I already have a part-time job in a shop 2 days per week. Would I be able to go 'on the bank' alongside?? What exactly does bank working mean? Is it adhoc as and when they need cover and can I decline if working at my other job or if it's not convenient? Any advice from anyone whose worked fir the NHS on a Bank basis would be appreciated!

I have done Bank NHS work but it’s quite a few years ago now. It meant I had no fixed hours but in reality the hours were pretty regular. I did it whilst at uni but it was based in my home town so I would work during the holidays as much as they needed me and the position was kept open whilst I was away at uni. Someone will hopefully have more recent experience.

Yes, it means exactly what you say. You can select shifts from those available.

I worked in various hospitals in their "Nursebank", I filled in where needed....

The actual process varies slightly depending on the agency the trust use I believe, our local trust (I have several family members who work admin and nursing on bank) there's an app and they advertise the shifts so many days in advance and you apply to cover the shifts of your choice

Ooh this sounds good. I like the fact I can pick which shifts I want! 😊

I was a bank secretary years ago. I worked full-time and covered firstly for holidays, then sickness and then general support to whichever department ended it most.
