Would you let your 13 Yr old DS get a buzz cut?

He's going into year 9 and would like a buzz cut. I dont mind what he does to his hair as long as its permitted in school (which it is).

I mentioned it in convo to my mum and she was definitely against it-he'll look like a thug, convict, ill.

I think he should be able to do what he wants, it's his head!

I would absolutely hate for my sons to do this but in year 9 I think it’s their choice.

i would strongly discourage though.

Ihatethenewlook · 22/08/2022 17:27

At 13 I’d say it was up to him as long as the school allows it. He’ll be able to tell for himself if it looks awful, and it’ll grow back in a couple weeks

OwlBasket · 22/08/2022 17:36

Nope. My DS is 13 and I very recently refused to let him have a buzz cut. There is NO other hairstyle I’d forbid mind.

After talking it through with him it turned it he just didn’t really know what he wanted, apart from a lot shorter than he’s been wearing it.

It's his hair. My son has just finished Y11, he has gone from very long hair, a very cool boy band worthy shortish cut, a terrible mohican, he then shaved it off at number 2. I think he regrets that a bit as he is having a bit of a long wait until he can do anything else interesting with his hair. His hair is really the least of concerns compared whether he pass his GCSEs next week.

Beetlewings · 22/08/2022 17:44

It's up to him. You'll be amazed at how fast a kids hair can grow.

Squashedraddish · 22/08/2022 17:45

I would let my ds but j would be a bit gutted as I gave him a terrible buzz cut in lockdown and learnt that he absolutely does not suit it at all. But if it’s allowed in school and it’s what your ds wants, I would let him do it. Hair grows, it’s not like he’ll be stuck with it forever.

Kanaloa · 22/08/2022 17:48

I would be fine with it. I had a buzz cut and I don’t think I looked like a convict! Anyway presumably all his teachers will know he’s not a convict unless they teach in a prison.

I think it’s a very practical and clean/fresh hairstyle and I’m surprised more people don’t have it to be honest. I do miss it although it sometimes makes you a bit more self conscious since you have nothing to hide behind type of thing!

HairyToity · 22/08/2022 17:51

Wouldn't bother me. Hair grows. It's not like he's getting a tattoo.

MissyB1 · 22/08/2022 17:52

Zero chance I would let my 13 year old, and it would be a massive no from dh as well. Luckily his school doesn't allow it anyway so we don't have to have that battle!

If you are happy though thats all that matters isn't it? Your mum will have to suck it up.

Butterbean9 · 22/08/2022 17:53

I wouldn't stop him, it's his hair.

Pieceofpurplesky · 22/08/2022 18:10

It's his hair. They look awful though. At school (I teach) it's a fad - a couple of really naughty kids got it done and hangers-on followed.

MrsMop1964 · 22/08/2022 18:15

if it was ok with school it'd be ok with me

AmazingBouncingFerret · 22/08/2022 19:10

My son and his friends did it during lockdown.
They all have mullets now. Not sure which is worse tbh…

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/08/2022 19:12

I'm in the 'it's his body' school. DD currently has pink hair, younger than him. The message that they control their own body for me is more important than perceived social impacts.

Would have been better to try it in June though, in case he hates it!

VacayingInTheHamptons · 22/08/2022 19:15

My son has had a buzz cut, long hair and everything in between. It’s only hair. I wouldn’t allow dyes at that age but other than that if it’s ok with school, it’s not something I’d care about.

Ha. Love a good mullet. 😂 Take lots of photos to embarrass them with in future years.

Mumdiva99 · 22/08/2022 19:18

My 14 year old has just had his second one (last one about 4 years ago). I hate it. I think he looks like a thug. But.......it's only hair. And it's not my hair. And....he could be rebelling with worse things than a hair cut.

Mossstitch · 22/08/2022 19:37

So long as school allows it they should have what they want, it's their way of expressing themselves (and far better than anything permanent like tattoos or body piercings😱). Honestly it grows within a week or two. My youngest has had everything from 6" gelled spikes, long hair, shoulder length bob when he asked me to cut his long ponytail off (I secretly hated that one) but before long he asked me to shear it off to about 6mm. He's saved a fortune in barbers, don't actually think he's ever been and he's in his 30s🤔 buy electric hair cutter and you will save a fortune👍

GreyCarpet · 22/08/2022 19:46

I agree, they look awful but ti's only hair.

My daughter is 16 and, over the past 4 years, she's had it bleached blonde; dyed shocking pink; pink and purple; i advised against blue/turquoise for a couple of reasons. It's against school rules, in theory, but they turn a blind eye to it in practice.

She's also pierced her ears, pierced her nose, done her own helix piercing... against my advice but there you go.

I got the clippers out the other day to shave my boyfriend's head - he has a mohican. I asked her if she wanted the sides of her head shaved. She didn't 😁

She's also kind, empathetic, independent, confident, sorted out her further education placement for next year.

If all be wants to do is experiment with different hairstyles, it's not the end of the world.

There are worse things he could he doing.

GreyCarpet · 22/08/2022 19:49

My son grew his hair long and when he finally had it cut off, they cut it off in 4x 18 inch long pony tails to he donated to a charity that makes wigs for children with cancer.

I was a bit gutted that he'd cut it but it was his intention to donate it. It's why he grew it in the first place.

It's only hair

Gallant282 · 22/08/2022 19:53

Thanks everyone, I'll let him have it. Like many of you have said it'll grow back quickly.

He's a really kind, caring, polite, considerate child so anyone who knows him knows he's not a thug.

I think he wants it because the 'in' styles at the moment are the curly mop or the buzz and he has poker straight hair which just lies flat. Shame curtains haven't made a come back-hes rock them!

OP posts:
Aria20 · 22/08/2022 20:01

@Gallant282 my 13yo ds is trying to make his hair go into curtains so I think they are on the come back again! He also asked for a buzz cut or perm. Grin

SleepingAgent · 22/08/2022 22:22

It's either well dodge 80s mullet or 90s boy band curtains on trend around here at the moment!

I'd def let him have a buzz cut over a mullet Grin
