Coming to Glasgow for 3 days, seeing Coldplay one night but looking for ideas what to do during that day, with 12 ds and 14 dd.They like anything really, shopping, museums etc but we are on a budget. I was thinking of a day trip to Edinburgh one day on the train.
Any ideas gratefully received 😀

The museums are free- kelvingrove museum is great and next to a huge park and great restaurants in Finneston.
theres also the transport museum which is free and on the Clyde.
Buchanan street is great for shopping and west end is great for wandering- take the subway and get off at hill head and you’ll be on Byres road- the botanic gardens are there and you could walk to kelvingrove from there or just get the subway again.
I wouldn’t bother going into Edinburgh castle- quite pricey for what it is. If you’d like a hike, Arthur’s west is good. The new st James’ shopping centre in Edinburgh is also
v good.
unsure of any specific interests so most of that is free!

The Burrell Collection - recently refurbished museum.

I would do what @Michellexxx said that's loads to keep you busy.

Meseekslookatme · 22/08/2022 15:44

The transport museum is brilliant!

RishiRich · 22/08/2022 16:00

The science centre is brilliant and you can watch a film at the iMax afterwards.

balalake · 22/08/2022 16:02

If you go to Edinburgh, the Scottish National Gallery and Portrait Gallery, both a short walk from Waverley station, are worth visiting.

Haudyourwheesht · 22/08/2022 16:36

The Everyman cinema in Princes' Sq is worth a visit. Lots of nice restaurants and coffee shops, plus moderately high end shops in there too. Good people watching.

If they're into music there's a Glasgow city music walking tour which is good.

Thank you all so much!! Lots of things to do and I very much appreciate it

There's a bin strike on in Edinburgh so the place is a filthy mess at the moment.

Dinoteeth · 23/08/2022 06:23

Kelvingrove Art Gallery is free as is the Riverside (Transport museum) if you were going through to Edinburgh I'd do the Castle or the National Museum).

Another option would be Stirling Castle.

maldivemoment · 23/08/2022 06:40

If you go the the West-end (Glasgow) I’d recommend a walk through Glasgow uni. Just behind Kelvingrove. The cloisters are beautiful. Could do the Hunterian museum too?

Choccowoofwoof · 23/08/2022 06:49

I go to Glasgow regularly- it’s amazing! Take a trip to Loch Lomond - it’s only about 45 minutes on the local train (Glasgow queen street station to Balloch station) costs about £5 return! Lovely day out - book a sweeneys loch cruise beforehand. Also the shopping in Glasgow is excellent, take a trip around Frasers department store (a bit run down now but you can tell how lovely it once was) and if you like books the Waterstones on Sauchiehall street is out of this world it has 4/5 floors .

Q1w2e3 · 23/08/2022 06:50

There’s a mural trail which is nice too.

CormoranStrike · 23/08/2022 06:55

I wouldn’t avoid Edinburgh on such a short trip and concentrate on Glasgow and it’s surrounds.

transport museum, science museum, Kelvingrove (I was disappointed in the imax experience personally).

A walk along the Clyde side is lovely, and Glasgow Green is a surprisingly nice park.

For something very different go “doom the water”. Train tickets to Wemyss Bay (very quaint Victorian railway station), then foot passenger on the half hour ferry to Rothesay, go putting then have ice creams.

Do an open top bus tour is the island if you want the full experience, or go visit Mount Stuart house which is amazingly beautiful

Plutoisaplanet · 23/08/2022 06:57

Op asks what can I do in Glasgow when I visit and posters say go to Edinburgh! 😂

CormoranStrike · 23/08/2022 06:58

Hahaha “doon” not “doom”

OP herself suggested what she might do on a day in Edinburgh too, people were just giving feedback on that.

Nonamenoplacetogo · 23/08/2022 07:12

Yes I saw about the bin strike, we might avoid going for the day!

The transport museum is brilliant!

It really is! Stopped off there as a family on the way back from the Highlands once. Didn't think that it would hold everyone's attention for long (two teens) but it did.

dontyoubother · 23/08/2022 07:14

"I'm visiting Glasgow and want to go to Edinburgh" Grin As others have said Edinburgh isn't great at the moment- tail end of the fringe and the bin strike. The litter was almost ankle deep in some places at the weekend.

MichelleScarn · 23/08/2022 07:16

Some great ideas! Would also recommend isle of Cumbrae and a trip to Crocodile Rock, you can hire bikes either single or 4 person and go around the whole island!

@CormoranStrike Thanks for pointing that out, I’d missed that in my sleep deprived state.

No problem at all - on the plus side, how lucky is OP to have two great cities to choose from for days out?

Go for a Krispy Kreme doughnut via speedboat.
