I've been given (in front of teenagers) tickets for an event at the Albert Hall for 12 Nov. We never go anywhere so they're very excited. I live in Scotland so travel £+ but want to go. BUT... I just looked at Premier Inn prices & nearly fainted.
So, I looked at travel lodge. Nearly as bad. I need a family room, so maybe why?

The only rooms I can afford are out at Heathrow, Wimbledon, Croydon (£120 for 2 nights) or (more expensive) Docklands (£160) Obviously ALL of these would be a schlep but which would be cheapest / easiest to do? (never been to Heathrow, we've not flown). Would AirBnB be cheaper? (unlikely I feel but no idea)

Maybe we just cant go. But it would be amazing if we could.
Any advice please?

Finchley travellodge is cheap, plus if you don't book breakfast and source some food while out and about it will lower cost slightly.

The hotel is a 4 min walk from tube for you to get in to London and in a busy area so safe for late night walking back from tube.

Travelodge at Royal Albert Dock (think it's labelled as Excel) is usually reasonable and a 2 min walk from a DLR station

And an easy journey to the Albert Hall. DLR to Tower Gateway, change for District Line and a short walk from South Kensington tube.

Hounslow Central near Heathrow.
Not the classiest but lots of chain hotels used by Heathrow air crew, cheaper than right by the airport.
Piccadilly line tube direct to South Kensington ( 30 mins approx) and walk to RAH (10 mins)

JohnsShirt · 22/08/2022 15:14

Peacemaking as I need a room near there next month.

Wimbledon would best bet - assuming it’s Broadway and not South Wimbledon. Bang in the centre, overland and tube right there and about 9/10 stops on district line to South Ken (about 22 mins). If it’s South Wimbledon, then that’s Northern Line a bit more of a ballache for RAH - either bus to Wimbledon or Northern - Vic - circle or district to S Ken.

If you haven't bought your rail tickets yet, remember that you don't have to buy to arrive at King's Cross but can, on many websites, buy to arrive at the nearest station to your hotel. Getting an end-to-end ticket like this could save a decent amount of money, as well as save the hassle of having to sort out your tickets on arrival at King's Cross.

Say hello to the Wombles whilst you are at Wimbledon and have a lovely time.

On the matter of train strikes, hopefully dispute long settled before then, and as there is the Remembrance Sunday events, I very much doubt any strike would be then.

SquirmOfEels · 22/08/2022 18:08

If there are tube strikes (which I doubt, because I doubt they'll interfere with Remembrance events - other events, yes, but surely not that) then you either get a minicab (try Addison Lee, or Keens, latter less well known but are a south London firm that goes everywhere) or an Uber.

Or if you can allow plenty of time, the 156 bus to Clapham Junction (or train if they're running) and change to the 345 bus which goes to South Kensington tube, short walk from there

Solongtoshort · 22/08/2022 18:43

How young are your teens? When you are looking at train prices remember to see if you can use the young person rail card and that might free up some money for hotels. I love London, have fun.

YHA Thameside in Rotherhithe. We have stayed here many a time. Perfect for youngsters. And parents ❤️

Bromley South Premier Inn is a very good shout. 15 mins fast train to Victoria, then tube or number 52 bus to Royal Albert Hall.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH !!!

Feeling quite excited about it now (we never go AnyWhere!) :)

I got 2 nights in the new TL in central Wimbledon for me, Ds (18) & Dd (15) for £103.50 which seems good value. We'll 'save up' for breakfast though !

It’s a pretty easy run from the Heathrow travel lodge to the Albert Hall. We stayed there when we saw an opera before going on holiday. We drove, but I’m sure it could be done on public transport?

Honeyroar · 24/08/2022 11:25

(Sorry just seen you’ve already booked!)

tortiecat · 24/08/2022 11:52

I came on to advise but see you have booked - hope you all have a fab time!

That sounds great, hopefully I can get similar on Tuesday.
