Would you leave a bad B&b and go somewhere else?

We arrived in our B&b in Spain yesterday. It’s not that it’s not as described - but we hate it. Uncomfortable beds, smells odd, dirty bathroom, immediate street not nice. We’ve already paid for it (as per the booking site’s rules) and I can’t see us getting any kind of refund as there’s nothing “wrong” with it, we just hate it in person.

I’ve looked around and there are other hotel or Airbnb options in the area if we want to go somewhere else.

I can’t decide if we’d be irresponsible (financially) going somewhere else - or we’ll end up ruining our holiday a little bit if we don’t.

What would you do?

It’s just DH and I, no kids with us this time, and we’d looked forward to a nice break just the two of us!

Just go !

TheProvincialLady · 22/08/2022 07:31

If you can afford it then move. If you can’t, don’t. No need for guilt!

pinkunicorns54 · 22/08/2022 07:31

We did a few years back, similar to as your described however it just didn't 'feel' right... we left!

Just remember the other options are available in high season! Are they any better? I would check any alternative accommodation out before you pay any more

Chemenger · 22/08/2022 07:32

If you can afford it I would definitely move. We once moved from a noisy, uncomfortably hot campsite to a lovely hotel and it saved our holiday. You are meant to be enjoying yourselves, not enduring something.

Clymene · 22/08/2022 07:34

If you can afford it, move.

BarrelOfOtters · 22/08/2022 07:39

Done this a couple of times. Especially after realising which bit of town we like…. The other thing to remember is Spanish time is different so a dodgy street can suddenly turn into a swish shopping street at some random time of the day.

WeAreTheHeroes · 22/08/2022 07:40

Yes! Do it. Check out the alternatives if possible. Self catering tourist accommodation in Spain has a licence number from the local council which is likely to be in the Airbnb and other listings. If you then Google that listing you can find the other places it's listed and the full address.

If you paid by credit card you may have recourse for it not been up to standard. Do complain before you leave - I think they have to have a guest comments/complaints book and it would help any claim you make if you completed this before you left.

WonderinFree · 22/08/2022 07:49

So here are the questions you need to help you make the decision:

  1. On a scale of 1-10, how much impact will it make on your long term finances to move hotel, where 10 is a lot and 1 is very little.

  2. When will be the next time you can have this time, no kids, with your partner.

  3. On a scale of 1-10, how much impact will staying in a crappy hotel make to your holiday enjoyment where 10 is a lot and 1 is very little.

knittingaddict · 22/08/2022 07:58

It's dirty, so there is "something wrong with it". That's enough to make a complaint. Even the cheapest most basic accommodation should be clean.

TheBikiniExpert · 22/08/2022 08:01

You could maybe negotiate on a partial refund? I did this with a horrible hotel. Hsd paid for 3 nights but got away with one and not staying at all. Worth it!

CalistoNoSolo · 22/08/2022 08:07

It depends how long you are there - 5 nights I would move; 1 night I would suck it up unless it was really dire.

That said, dirty bathroom is unacceptable and I would complain. I also think uncomfortable beds can be complained about. A decent bed is pretty essential imo.

LondonWolf · 22/08/2022 08:09

We did on our last holiday. It wasn't bad as such just too small and cramped and we managed to do everything we wanted to in one day so I cancelled the second night and moved to our next accommodation early as they luckily had space.

user1471538283 · 22/08/2022 08:55

Yes go! Your life and time is far too short to have a miserable holiday.

Luredbyapomegranate · 22/08/2022 08:58

leave if you can afford it and it’s going to put a dampener on your holiday.

Complain to the site it’s not as described so take some photos. You probably won’t get any money back though, as you say.

Ineverpromisedyouarosegarden · 22/08/2022 11:10

Yes, I have done. Life is too short for bad holidays.

balalake · 22/08/2022 11:13

Talk to them about the dirty bathroom, that can be fixed. The other issues probably not, then depends how bad they are.

ParsleyPesto · 22/08/2022 11:14

Yes I’d move in a heartbeat. You’ll recover the money but never the experience.

Lucielllle87 · 22/08/2022 22:14

Thank you all! It’s what I needed to hear.

The bathroom dirt is more that it’s mouldy, rather than not properly cleaned. It’s just dirty in that it’s a bit gross.

We stayed out all day today, thinking that might make it better. But just knowing we didn’t have somewhere comfortable to go back to made me feel a bit glum in the day. So we’re going to try and book something else first thing in the morning! Hopefully one of the places I saw with availability will be much better than this place!
