Report here suggesting that rebates could be offered if you reduce use in the evening.

@Cynderella the Spanish often eat later 9/10pm might be something to consider. We normally eat around 8/9pm but that is often batch cooked and reheated

Nobody should be ironing at any time, what a waste of energy in this day and age. Can't imagine that there is that high percentage that wash clothes in the evening as it is better to wash in the morning and then hang outside in the day

Before I worked from home, I would often spend a whole day at the weekend doing laundry which meant the tumble drier would be on in the evenings. Many people put a wash on when they get home from work, so it's not sitting in the machine all day. Not everyone has an outside space to hang washing, and although I do, it rarely happens between Nov- March.

Its quite good for retired folks that go abroad for 3 months in the winter as they will get paid £18 a day for it as they won't be using very much electric

If you have access to an outdoor line which many people don't.

There are many things that need to be banned before ironing. Hot tubs to start with.

Grumpybutfunny · 22/08/2022 14:01

@OfficiallyBroken would rather give up the tumble dryer, eat at 10pm, invest in solar and turn down the heating than give up the hot tub. Two loads in the dryer uses more electric than a week of the hot tub.

The Spanish have siestas!

Hugasauras · 22/08/2022 15:19

We have Octopus Go so have super cheap electricity for four hours overnight, so we schedule all our appliances for then. It really does save a lot if you get a wash, dry and dishwasher on during that time - it's 7.5p per khW v standard charge for during the day.

Do you pay more for daytime electricity than the standard tariff?

What the fuck are you wittering on about?

My point is that ironing is not the most energy wasting thing that someone can do.

I was using hot tubs as an obvious example of something that's a frivolous use of energy and water when you come down to it, not a dig at hot tub users. Honestly, go project your paranoia about being a hot tub owner elsewhere.

Hugasauras · 22/08/2022 16:58

@Cynderella Not come October's price rise. It's more expensive than current flex but it's a fixed rate for a year. 40p daytime and 7.5p overnight.

Something that's just occurred to me (and I apologise for mentioning it over 4 months out) is 'what happens when we all want to cook our Christmas turkey at the same time'?

I think it's already known that ovens run slower on Christmas Day because there's so much demand on the grid. I think we might have our big meal on Christmas Eve instead or not at all because I'm not that bothered about it.

Hadn't realised that about Christmas Day ovens, how interesting! Makes total sense though. I think as it's just me and DD I'd probably make something the day before. Be sad to miss all those lovely roasting smells on the big day though, they somehow seems an intrinsic part of the day.

As to the rest - no tumble dryer, no gaming consoles here; but would be happy to commit to a lower rate for lower usage (though we've got storage heaters so no idea at all how that would work!)
