Rizzo is the most interesting character in Grease

I was just rewatching this last night. Sandy and Danny are both quite bland characters, he a bit dim but nice and trying too hard to be cool, she a pleasant clean living blonde cheerleader.
But Rizzo is more complex, putting on a hard front but really insecure and vulnerable behind it. It would have been interesting to see a spin-off exploring her story.

I thought Rizzo was in Midnight Cowboy?

May I present my new Rizzo dress… because there are worse things I could do. It has pockets.

I definitely would have used Rizzo over Betty as a name if I had been her. She so wasn’t a Betty

My local cinema has been showing Grease in the wake of Olivia NJ's death so I went along to see it. (For about the 50th time)😀 I was wondering why when she first enrolled at Rydell High she introduced herself as Sandy Olson. Then later in the film she was Sandy Dee. Anyone enlighten me?

stephaniestephanie · 26/08/2022 22:05

Has there ever even been a question that this is not true?

stephaniestephanie · 26/08/2022 22:07

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandra_Dee

This is who Sandy was compared to by Rizzo.

I guess to be fair, Danny is trying to change for Sandy too, turning up in the last scene, looking uncomfortable in a geeky cardigan! Although he does rip it off rather quickly.......😁

Doesn't he actually run and get a letter cardigan? Ie he did a load of extra sports to get that jacket.

Randomword6 · 26/08/2022 22:21

Yes I totally agree fangirling Stockhard Channing

She was Sandy Olson all the way through, but was compared to Sandra Dee, a real-life American actress who tended to play sweet, wholesome girls in her films.

Georgeskitchen · 26/08/2022 22:45

Ah right thanks I didn't realise there was an actual person called Sandra Dee 😅😆

Celia24 · 26/08/2022 22:51

I remember watching an old documentary about Sarah Michelle Gellar and she said Stockard Channing was her main inspiration as an actress growing up.

Kanaloa · 26/08/2022 22:52

She totally was. She was a bit ahead of her time too, she could have been portrayed as the plain ‘bad girl’ type but actually we see that she’s a victim of people’s attitudes to her and builds up a strong front to protect herself.

I liked how Kenickie seemed worried about
her riding the fairground rides at the end - I always thought if she had turned out to be pregnant he would have been supportive. Obviously he’s about 45 so should be ready to settle down anyway, but still.

SleepingAgent · 21/08/2022 14:39

Agreed. She was the only reason to watch it.

Dislike the whole "change yourself for a man" message but it was of it's time I guess.

I see this a lot and do semi-agree but isn’t the point that it’s both ways? Danny spends the second half of the film changing (joining up sports, becoming a more well rounded person) to be more suited to Sandy. Then she changed a little to be more suited to him. They both change. And before they dance again at the end he throws off the letterman jacket and she throws away the cigarette.

Loved Rizzo when it came out, love her now. Stockard Channing is an amazing actor and it has been good to see her over the ummm decades.

I too like to imagine that Rizzo did really well in her exams (bit like Cordy in Buffy) became a doctor and married Jed Bartlett.

londonlass71 · 26/08/2022 22:59

Agree ways loved her. I think Stockard Channing was so well cast in that role. I love her as an actress she was also great in 6 degrees

MintyGreenDreams · 26/08/2022 23:02

Imagine if the film had starred Rizzo and Kenickie instead would have been a totally different film probably an 18 Grin

Divebar2021 · 26/08/2022 23:08

when the film initially came out I had a script / photo book of the film. ( a bit like Jackie / Blue Jeans stories) I always played Rizzo among my friends. I badgered my mum for black pencil skirt but was cruelly thwarted. The only song I would ever listen to now is “ There are worse things I could do” - everything else is far to cheesy.

blueshoes · 26/08/2022 23:09

Rizzo looks like she could be 40 years of age, but was apparently in High School, Same for many of the other actors and actresses. Have you noticed Rydell High is full of middle aged-looking students?

The greatest thing is that there is a tacit and collective suspension of disbelief amongst an entire generation.

We all love it.

Reallyreallyborednow · 26/08/2022 23:10

I would hope that Rizzo learnt her lesson that having unprotected sex could have had very big consequences too

iirc the condom broke, not that they didn’t use protection.

it had been in Kenickie’s wallet for years 😂.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 26/08/2022 23:15

Nah. Best song by a country mile was 'beauty school dropout'. Come to think of it, the only interesting character was the guardian angel, whilst bringing up the rear were the 'so called Mooners'.

Given what was later known about Hollywood, the Vince Fontaine character was scarily prescient.

😂I understand the cruel thwarting of the one thing that would allow you to fulfil your personality and destiny (and make you irresistible to boys, at least possibly, well I'm afraid that was the plan)

Mine was a particular pair of beige suede stilettos. No chance.

MumofSpud · 26/08/2022 23:22

Absolutely!
She also has the best song!
I have just come home from seeing the musical tonight and the character is much more prominent than Sandy (and stole the show!

Yes I always thought this
