Does anyone else find August a strange month? Can’t wait for September?

I don’t know how to describe it really but I have never enjoyed August.
It seems a strange month to me, like everything has been put on hold, and I’m eager to get it over with.
Maybe it’s simply because September is my favourite month. I feel that August is a stale month and everything gets ‘reset’ in September. The kids go back to school, there are new programmes/series on tv and the weather seems more comfortable and mellow.
It sometimes almost feels like a ‘new year’ thing for me come September, I’m full of more ideas for the future, feels like my brain comes out of holiday mode etc.
Anyone else feel this way? Maybe it’s just me and my weird brain lol!

I quite enjoy August, it’s quiet at work so I can get important, but not urgent, projects done. DC are off school so not constantly rushing about trying to accommodate sports clubs/fixtures, nagging about homework etc. DS’s birthday is at the end of August, that signals the end of summer for me, and I’m ready for autumn then.

My birthday is August. I like it, it's a quiet time at work (winter is our busy season) teen DC gets a nice break from school. I prefer it to September when the rush starts again.

Yes - I have never enjoyed August, particularly so in recent years with the stress of teen DC gcse/ a level results looming for the entire month. It always feels like a tedious race to get stuff done and pack activities in before summer ends. I love September and Autumn though, so looking forward for it to be over!

I completely agree with you. I hate August. It's just a barren month to be endured imo.
I love September for all the reasons you outlined. It's far superior in every way. Nothing to do with it being my birthday obviously 🙄

Problem with September is everyone starts murmuring about ... Christmas !

Hm2020 · 21/08/2022 12:15

I do sort of know what you but it’s my child’s birthday month so this year especially first year without restrictions since he was much younger we’ve had lots of fun things todo in holiday type weather I’ve had a blast but am looking forward to getting our routine back some what.

JustlookingNotbuying · 21/08/2022 12:21

CountFoscoslittlewhitemice that’s the word I was trying to come up with, barren! It’s such a tumbleweed month.

I absolutely feel like this too OP, I could have written it.

Routines are out of the window, work is quiet so it drags, it's a sort of summertime sadness. Always thought I was alone in feeling like this. I perk up in the autumn.

JustlookingNotbuying · 21/08/2022 12:22

I am glad it’s not just me. I have this real melancholic feeling in August and feel so much better in September.

Oh no I like August, though I'd say October/November/December is my favourite time of year. But August reminds me of endless summers, going on holiday and not having to hurry. September I like, even though I didn't enjoy school, but it's 'back to reality' time.

It feels a bit weird now after the excitement of the end of term, treats and days out to start the summer and then our 2 week holiday.

It's like we've come home to this strange 2 week period, bridging the gap and biding time until the normal routine of school, clubs, normal work starts again.

I wish the school holidays were reduced to a month and the extra time was tagged on to other holidays throughout the year!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/08/2022 12:33

I love August - it's anything but barren and although I suppose it is the close of summer it is often the best bit if you can get into the country.

A lot of people don't like it, maybe because of old memories of going back to school?

Antarcticant · 21/08/2022 12:34

I always take my holidays before the school holidays start (for obvious cost reasons) so the highlight of my summer is long since gone and it always feels a bit stale by this stage; plus the nights are really drawing in now.

However, I'm dreading actual winter for cost-of-living/heating reasons, and I almost feel as though I want to get it over with quickly - it's like summer is a precipice and I am teetering on it.
