The ultimate swimming googles for 9yo who hates water

After a lot of perseverance I have finally got my water hating DC to a point where he can tolerate swimming lessons (he had an intensive course over the summer and it helped massively with his water confidence) but we're currently on 3rd pair of googles and none of them are doing the job properly.

DC is fine as long as his eyes are dry. Do such wonder googles exist. I'm happy to spend a bit of money if they work!!

Why aren't they working? What have you tried? Is there a reason normal goggles don't fit properly - small / large face?

Racing goggles come with different nose pieces to change the fit.
You can also buy an accessory that is basically a piece of posh elastic with a toggle, you remove the normal head band and put this one through and makes it much easier to put goggles on and tighten them to the right size

If you look at Proswimwear or Allen's swimwear or other swimming specialist you'll find all sorts of gizmos.

We've used a pair purchased at the pool (binned)some Speedo ones and these.

Issue seems to be they have all "let water in" (but DC is removing them several times during swimming when he isnt face in water) and two pairs have had the strap come out when DC was trying to put them on and he's been unable to thread it back in properly. The most recent pair the swim teacher just tied a knot in them.

Don't bin them as he may well get on with them in future and it's always worth having a spare pair in the bag.

Get him to use them in the bath so he can learn to put them on and off.

Does he have any other sensory issues or just his eyes in a pool?

Try buying some large eyepiece ones so that they are more like snorkeling ones without the nose cover or try the elastic I mentioned above, unfortunately I can't remember the name for it as its a few years since DD swam competitively.

These ate the type my kids used.

They didn't like the smaller individual goggles, hurt their eyes and let water in.

How old is your DC?

My DC can't stand normal goggles but is really happy with these ....

Try mask type ones. Aquasphere. Need to push them onto face though to get best seal

GoldenMalicious · 21/08/2022 10:46

Another vote for Aquasphere mask ones - they were the best for my boys when they were that sort of age

@Crunchymum I found this article had some interesting - it's 2015 but might give you some ideas of different brands or styles

Aquasphere are the best goggles bar none.

We do a lot of swimming in our house and they are the only ones we buy.

DS has Speedo Fastskins www.speedo.com/junior-fastskin-hyper-elite-mirror-goggles-black-orange/13552674.html

They are expensive, but he swims competitively and these stay put, even as he dives in. They’ve lasted about 2 years now and he swims a lot, so value per wear has been OK.

Thank you so much everyone!! Appreciate the info and rec's.

There are a few other sensory issues @Singleandproud (mainly around food)

We've just had two weeks worth of lessons everyday and he's gone from not even putting his face in the water to jumping in the big pool with the instructor but there were intermittent complaints when water got into the googles. He had his weekly lesson yesterday and was crying in the pool as he couldn't cope with the water in his eyes. Such a set back after all of his progress.
