Where to move

If you were 35 and looking to move somewhere in the UK on your own, where would you go? Looking for somewhere relatively friendly and culturally vibrant that isn't London (lived there and found it stressful/overwhelming). I veer towards prettiness rather than urban concrete. Am considering Edinburgh but I get SAD in winter so think moving that far north might not be the best idea. All ideas/opinions welcome!

You're right @Miriam101 - it's about putting yourself out there, which I intend to do despite my introvert nature!

Winchester is very pretty and also not too far from the coast. If Bristol feels too urban then how about Bath?

Houseplantmad · 20/08/2022 20:28

I was going to say Hove, or Brighton. Coastal, lots going on, beautiful surrounding area.

Manchester area? Chorlton, Didsbury

Fifthtimelucky · 20/08/2022 20:35

I'd arrange a series of weekend breaks over the next few months and see where takes your fancy.

Personally I'd start with medium sized cathedral cities like Bath, Winchester, Chichester, Canterbury, Oxford, Exeter, Norwich, Salisbury or Cardiff.

Liverpool - I lived there for 6 years and made loads of friends. Actually lived on the Wirral and we used to go to north wales & Delamere forest etc lovely walks and the coast is never far

Cakemonger · 20/08/2022 20:56

That would be ideal @Fifthtimelucky!

Love the name @Houseplantmad. Is Hove a friendly place generally?

I’m only going on v superficial knowledge! DD is at uni near Brighton and we’ve had some nice times in Brighton but even lovelier ones in Hove. Seems to have a more chilled vibe. The beach is also much less frantic down that end.

York sprung to mind. Pretty place to walk around and has a lovely atmosphere.

OldTinHat · 20/08/2022 21:09

Chichester doesn't have much going on.

Brighton and Hove are great.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions - lots of food for thought!
