Dressing gown in the afternoon

And no plans to get dressed. It's heaven but do feel an undertow of guilt.

I was supporting a family member with health issues this week and feel exhausted.

My issue with pj's/dressing gowns is that I feel really self conscious answering the door or just putting things in the bin.
I only wear them when I'm ill, otherwise I feel dirty and like I'm wasting a day. Which I have no issue doing in tracksuit bottoms. 😃

Please shower regardless, have some self-respect and consideration for others in the house assuming you are not alone.

😮😂😂😂

I think you'll find this pretty commonplace in the towns and villages. There was even a bar that banned locals from wearing dressing gowns there in Malaga. Normally the older generation on the street in dressing gowns, but most Spanish people I know from many different areas wear pjs if they're lounging around at home.

This is quite funny given the popular MN view of Europe (all of it) as elegant, coiffed, thin and right-thinking and the UK (all of it except the poster's immediate circle) as slobby, fat, lazy and thick 😆

I don't like to wear a dressing gown after breakfast myself, but I AM partial to a pair of plaid pyjama trousers, vest top and slouchy cardi.

@IllDoItButOnlyForTheAttention

I think you mean left thinking…. . 🇪🇺🚩

You're right about the generalised view of chic Europeans, pp, you'd think the British were a nation of slobs and the rest of Europe stylish, slender and coiffed!

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 21/08/2022 11:34

I’m going to join you. Slept really badly and had an early shift at work, I’m going to shower and get pjs on for the afternoon . Hopefully I’ll fall asleep on the sofa at some point.

I think people always think of the people who live in Madrid or Paris or Milan, but generally the rest of Italy, France, Spain etc, is a different world to the capital cities. Same as Wigan is nothing like London 🤷🏻‍♀️.

PolishingCandles · 21/08/2022 11:45

I often spend all day in my dressing gown.
It's my home and I'll dress as I please in it.

Maireas · 21/08/2022 12:05

@LaDamaDeElche - you're right. It's a simplified view. There was a ghastly thread on here recently, though - British people being the least attractive and stylish people in the world. The general agreement was that no-one in Europe would go out without looking catwalk ready!

Mitsouko67 · 21/08/2022 12:38

Have a lovely afternoon Angelica!

I feel so much better now after a restful day.

And I'm clean and showered. 😜

LaDamaDeElche that sounds very unusual for Spain! Do you live in an expat enclave?

I lived out in the campo for a number of years and all the old ladies in the villages did this and even saw a few young ones out and about getting petrol etc. Not a look I liked but not my concern.

Such silly generalisations. There are attractive, stylish people everywhere and people who aren't. The only generalisation I would make about the Spanish in comparison to British people is that in general they have better hair (so jealous of the luscious hair most Spanish women have!!). Apart from that you get the same mix of people as you do anywhere in the world.

Pinkcadillac · 21/08/2022 16:07

What I have seen in smaller villages in Spain are older ladies wearing "batas" - these are very simple summer cotton dresses that may look like housecoats but are really meant to be worn both at home and outside. They are not sleepwear

I definitely think house coats should make a comeback. My nan used to wear them - she called them her 'pinny'. The one I most remember was dark purple.

Maireas · 21/08/2022 16:38

Those batas are so practical and cool.

veggiemonster · 21/08/2022 16:45

I come across posts like this quite often and can never tell if it's a joke, and I genuinely do not mean that in a nasty way.
It's your house, why would you feel guilty wearing a dressing gown in the afternoon??
It's always been the norm for my family and friends to get into pyjamas or joggers the minute you get in from work or whatever you were doing outside. Maybe we are the odd ones out here! :)

They wear dressing gowns. Like literal dressing gowns. Are you Spanish? Do you live in Spain? I've lived here for years and all my in laws are Spaniards, friends, neighbours etc and they wear dressing gowns. The same ones as we do in the U.K. Una bata is just the word for dressing gown in Spanish. You do see some old ladies wearing "house coats" which are like cleaners uniforms, but they normally wear the dressing gowns over them in the colder weather.

LaDamaDeElche · 21/08/2022 10:31

😂😂😂 No, my partner is Spanish and I live in an area with barely any English people - Elche.

I live in Andalucía and people do it here too. Not in the summer as much obviously cos it's too hot.

LaDamaDeElche · 21/08/2022 18:33

OrangeBlossomsintheSun I've seen people do it in many areas. The only place I didn't was in Madrid, but I was staying in the centre. It's really common. In the summer no, you'd die 😂 Especially in Andalusia, it's even hotter there than here and it's hot as hell here!

QueenofLouisiana · 21/08/2022 18:40

That bata looks like such a good idea.

To be honest, the lounge wear sold here is basically just pjs and a hoodie. There’s just an idea that giving it a different name means that people won’t think you are in your pjs.

I also really like the idea of house pjs rather than bed pjs. (Peri menopausal, no chance I could wear pjs in bed, I’d cook.)
