Please does anyone know if these ok for boys at the moment fashion wise? I need help choosing trainers for my academy age ds who is not very good at noticing fashion trends.

Ds has black superstars for school and always has. He has a classic white pair too. He is 7 nearly 8 though so not your target age. I think he looks cool 😁. Superstars are classic surely?

PeekAtYou · 20/08/2022 14:55

Do you mean primary school age? In which case fine.

PeekAtYou · 20/08/2022 14:57

They were very popular with teen girls a few years ago but secondary school age boys were Nike around here- Jordans, Air Force, Blazers

Interesting post. 🤔

To be honest, I'd be deliberately not buying anything considered 'height of fashionable' for my DS (13yrs).

I don't want him growing up thinking fitting in with the 'cool crowd' is even vaguely important. Thankfully, he's not interested in brand name clothing but prefers fairly plain dark coloured items.

Must admit back in the day, I always thought the other teen girls who judged a boy by his shoe choices were just plain weird. 😂

mattressspring · 20/08/2022 15:18

How about letting him choose what he wants rather then trying to mould him into a fashion accessory?

Yumtr · 20/08/2022 15:19

Yes beginning of secondary age. I don’t really want to buy him cool. Just not uncool. Something that will blend in but not make any particular statement. I did a quick search on here and noticed lots of people saying they had bought them for their dds so wasn’t sure if I had got it wrong. Maybe Nike is safer bet. I wanted to get something vaguely waterproof as he walks across a field with king grass to get to school. So that’s why I got the all leather adidas

I am honestly not trying to mould him in to anything. I am clueless about fashion myself. He has no idea what he wants. Doesn’t want to even look at shoes in shops so I am trying to make decision on his behalf. He normally wear Nike running trainers but they aren’t really suitable for school and not waterproof at all.

Air Force ones are the shoe of choice here from year 7 to 13 (and beyond)

Yumtr · 20/08/2022 15:36

Ah Air Force one’s look good thanks. Perhaps more reliable choice than the adidias

Which is fine if that's what your DS is happy with. My DC chose their own clothes / trainers. They are given a budget limit, of course, and often we'll get pre-loved stuff if the new version is £££. But I wouldn't refuse to buy a certain kind of trainer (or other clothes) as long as they are affordable and practical, just because they are also "cool".

OP Nike AF1 is definitely a safer choice than Superstars unless your DS has specifically asked for Superstars.

josephjohnson · 20/08/2022 15:59

@Yumtr is he allowed to wear trainers rather than shoes as school shoes? None of the schools around me would allow it, even all-black and all-leather trainers.

All of the schools around me would allow it.
I'm sure OP would have checked first.

Yumtr · 20/08/2022 18:10

Yes it’s not officially allowed but most do wear black leather trainers. He is going into his second year and wore shoes for his first year. But I gather most switch to trainers once in second year

Thanks for the advice. I think I will send back to superstars and get Air Force one

This is such an unempathetic post. If you have a kid who is a bit fashion clueless, you want to help them fit in. I have a similar boy. Kids can be cruel, as we all know. I'd rather not leave it to my slightly socially naive DS to try and change all the cool boys in the world (not saying OP's boy is socially naive by the way).

Hope you find some good trainers, OP. Think Nike is safe. Adidas apparently not cool at the moment. It's ridiculous but there we are.

Ducksurprise · 22/08/2022 12:30

I do think people forget how hard senior school is, and that teenagers on the whole are programmed to want to fit in (even those that don't seem to fit in, want to fit in with their chosen friends )

Buying a decent pair of shoes can just take away one issue, when I see the new year 7's in their start right schools and smuggle bags I do think wtf has that parent done to prepare them for senior school, in my experience the ones that don't complain to their parents do so because they are aware of the costs or don't want to trouble their parents, not because they are happy being different.

Agree air force 1's are a safer bet.

Chimchar · 22/08/2022 12:48

Another vote for AF1's.
Happy to say that they wear well too in all weathers and for lunchtime football on the yard!

Yumtr · 22/08/2022 15:26

Oh that’s reassuring they survive a kick about too. Wasn’t sure about that

OP posts:
Yumtr · 22/08/2022 15:36

A kick about with a football I mean. I appreciate all the responses very much. We had a chat and he said he would be happy with his M&S shoes again. I have ordered both and will let him make final choice
