How do you live differently on holiday?

Apart from the obvious things like not having to work, etc. This holiday hasn't been all sunshine and roses, the children haven't been sleeping properly, etc, but I can't help notice day to day how much better I feel in myself.

  1. I am taking better care of myself - an hour in the bathroom each morning whilst the children are playing, and look and feel so much better for it. I barely get 5 mins at home.
  1. I enjoy food so much more, don't worry about the calories or budgeting the price of food. I feel so much better.
  1. I spend so much more time outdoors, going out to places, eating outside, etc
  1. I love people watching, looking in little shops and travelling around. I feel so inspired.
  1. I have time to sit down and daydream. At home I always have something to be doing.

I don't wear shoes
I don't use make up
I experiment with new ingredients when cooking
I read actual books
I sleep better
I go to bed later and get up later

I exercise more (mostly by walking)
I talk to DH more

We do a lot of touring in beautiful scenery.

I smile more
I empty my mind from mundane shit
I walk more
eat a lot more salads which I love but can’t be arsed to faff at home
Sleep more.
Wear less clothes

I love holidays.

I leave all my make-up and hair stuff at home and just wash and brush my hair. Same with skincare routines, leave it behind just use SPF, cleanser and flannel.

Walk more, read more books, minimal housework (we self cater but keep it much simpler than at home), take more photos. Drink more alcohol. Less time on my phone.

In advance I will say that our ‘holidays’ are two months long 🙄 DH and I both work in schools, both DSs at school aged. And we live in France = long summer holidays. So it boils down to two whole months out of any semblance of a ’normal routine’. We don’t have any family living nearby, so all childcare etc is down to us. And it’s mostly fucking boiling here so our outdoor options are limited. So:

I don’t exercise as much (usually cycle to work daily)
I eat more and cook less.
i don’t see my friends for weeks and weeks, so I feel quite lonely tbh (they are all away as we are)
We spend a lot more time together as a family. Aka I get zero time to myself.
We spend time with our families. Aka DH and I spend our time packing, re-packing, working out the logistics of seeing extended families in the UK, flying, driving, negotiating.
We spend a lot of money.

Funnily enough, I drink a lot more.

DH calls holidays “where good habits go to die”: I agree!

What are you doing for an hour in the bathroom OP?

Do new things
Eat according to hunger not habit
share childcare more equally

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 20/08/2022 07:16

DP and I swap to the opposite sides of the bed. No idea why, just a habit we fell into quite early, when away from home

BarrelOfOtters · 20/08/2022 07:29

I smile more apparently.

An hour in the bathroom??

I do the opposite! We go to a Scottish island for two weeks each Easter and I turn wild. I wear no make up and don't style my hair.

That's odd-so do we! The last holiday we took we were 3 days in when I said; 'have you noticed we are on the other side of the bed?'. We could not account for it but it happens all the time!
