Why are some things now singular?

It irrationally irritates me.

Examples:

"I love a flared jean" Jeansssss used to be jeans. Not a jean- that was my mum's friend. Jean.

"Just finishing the look off with a red lip" What colour will your other lips be. We used to say red lipsssssss.

Same goes for "a smoky eye", don't you make them both up?

And don't get me started on the POP of colour that apparently gets added randomly.

That feels better.

This irritates the hell out of me as well, i can’t stand it! Glad it’s not just me!

ArcheryAnnie · 20/08/2022 05:08

Yes to all of your examples, @Nugg . Bowie is the only person who could get away with saying "a trouser".

Perfectlystill · 20/08/2022 05:12

Fashion/beauty journalists trying to sound cool. It's pathetic.

Ilovenutellaaaaa · 20/08/2022 05:17

I think it's just people latching on to/copying th American ways of phrasing things...it does sound weird saying it singular though, I agree with you it sounds better plural

cariadlet · 20/08/2022 05:24

As long as people don't start saying "math" instead of "maths", I'm ok.

My heartthrob 😀👍

What worries me is the prospect of US soup naming coming over here.

Oh hell my son is a maths geek and he says math. Has done for years 🤦🏼‍♀️

Such a relief it's not just me!! Grates on me!!

@cariadlet, me too - ‘math’ makes me want to slap any Brit that says it!

SilverLiningPlaybook · 20/08/2022 07:47

I agree OP. It’s so, so irritating .
So many other Americanisations creeping in too where words are just dropped out of sentences. To me it just sounds very childish.
Poor grammar and spelling is everywhere now too. Sound like a Grumpy Old Woman.

Odd that, given that they say "macaroni/mac and cheese" while we say "macaroni cheese" (or used to — I've noticed more British people starting to use the "and"). I didn't know their soups lost an and. Maybe it's the same and, just wanted a change of scenery.

LadyCampanulaTottington · 20/08/2022 07:51

I can ignore most but the one that gives me
stabby rage is “no one” spelled noone.

ITS NOT ONE WORD, ITS TWO WORDS

ofwarren · 20/08/2022 07:56

I hate how blusher has now become 'blush'.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 20/08/2022 07:58

The lip/trouser thing isn’t an Americanism - it’s the fashion singular (ie, just fashion people being twatty). Incredibly annoying.

Mac and cheese gets on my tits. It’s macaroni cheese - we’re not in Illinois, FFS!

The latest one I've seen is "fit".

Meaning "outfit".
