Where to move in Bristol /suburbs

Pollyg2112 · 19/08/2022 09:15

Hi there looking for some advice.
Me, my partner and our little 8 month old are looking to buy in Bristol, we living in Brighton for few years now but its sooo expensive and bit over rated thb! Before that we lived in London.

What are some of the suburbs in Bristol that have fairly decent shops with easy access to nature/parks. Good for families, Just a normal area with a mix of all people, not looking for middle class bubble where we live now , equally not a rough area. Somewhere in middle with down to earth friendly community mentality.

Thanks in advance!
Any help much appreciated:)

@daisychain01
We have a Waitrose end of our street! I wouldn't probably miss it too, if I could afford to shop there.😊.

Thanks everyone!!this has been an informative thread..looks likes like we won't be able to afford much so we will see what the market saying toward end of year. Fingers crossed. There is considerable more on Rightmove in comparison to Brighton and Hove so that's a promising start.
Will we regret moving away from the sea? We would have to anyway even if we stayed here, or up coast to a crap seaside town .. Bristol has allot more to offer I think even if we moved further out. Need to spend some more time visiting.
Luckily my partners job is remote and I'm a self employed fitness instructor so would have to start from scratch anyway.
Thanks again it's been super helpful! Xx😊

i was also thinking fishponds based on your criteria OP.
im in Redfield, (about 20 min walk to the centre if you’re a slow walker like me) which is also v popular with young families but a bit more urban, whereas fishponds is more leafy/suburban and further out.

I feel very landlocked in bristol I'll be honest
I grew up in coastal Scotland and miss it - weston isnt a great option

I head to porthcawl for the beach, can be there in 1.15, rest bay and ogmore are nice.

the gower is only another 45mins on top of that, the benches are stunning there so we’ll worth a 2 hour run down the M4 imo

curvymumma79 · 22/08/2022 13:14

What about just outside of Bristol? Portishead? Clevedon? Backwell?

Pollyg2112 · 22/08/2022 13:58

@curvymumma79 defo considering portishead.. not heard of the others so will check out! Thanks!

Your budget is not big for what you want in Bristol. Have you considered Norwich? Lovely little city but everything you need, short drive to an actual beach (loads of them) and also the broads. Just sayin!

Seconded- Weston super mare is awful! So so awful.

beachcomber70 · 22/08/2022 19:10

Lets get things into a bit of perspective. Parts of Weston Super Mare aren't great, you wouldn't want to live there. Fair enough. Parts of Bristol, and parts of all major cities are awful, not desirable for families/anyone either. i think we all know that. Affordable though, yes. A lot of diverse properties for every sort of buyer, bargains compared to Bristol.

Everyone's experiences of places are different according to where you go and what you experienced there and other variables. Personally I would never live in Bristol again, too much traffic/fumes/hills and would choose any village in North Somerset [lived in Nailsea and Clevedon].

I have lived happily in Weston for 27 years, as has one of my sons and his family. We have lovely homes in nice areas, as have our friends and their families and have personally not experienced any crime in all my time here. The beach isn't great and is muddy when the tide goes out. It's an estuary, it's not the 'sea' not everyone knows that so gets disappointed. Shopping isn't great but I've been to worse places.

So it isn't 'so, so awful'...that is just an opinion. I really don't like W-S-M bashing.

Just to add an area that hasn't been mentioned yet I live in Sea Mills which hasn't got much in the way of shops but Shirehampton just down the road has a nice high st.

There's loads of green space and it's next to the river, we're really pleased with the school and there's a strong community feel - I'm involved in a climate group that runs a repair cafe locally.

We bought a 3 bed here two years ago for 350k but there's a big range in house size here and it's a bit of a mix of people- didn't anticipate ending up here but really love it!

Traffic still terrible but it's on the Severn Beach line which cuts out a lot of it!

worriedniece · 23/08/2022 12:45

I would agree that Seamills is decent. I like Horfield and know a few people that live in Knowle but that seems a bit mixed. Dream area would of course be redland or clifton but that's not going to happen! I do think the suggestion of Cardiff if also much better- closer to nice beaches eg Gower and lovely countryside but better value

I grew up in the area. It may have improved but it was not great in the 80s/90s. I do quite like Uphil though and have good memories of visiting my granny there. Also have fond memories of Tropicana!

@Pollyg2112 highly recommend Portishead. Lots of families, public transport into Bristol is ok (meant to be getting a train line). I'm by the channel which would be out of budget but away from the water or on the hill there's older properties. Word of warning, they move fast - you need to talk to agents and get advance notice if possible, they often don't make it onto rightmove. Inland villages and towns would be more affordable for you but aren't as nice.

Pollyg2112 · 23/08/2022 15:08

@gogohmm oh wow really? Thanks for heads up!:)

@worriedniece my dad lives on the Gower right above three cliffs bay, it's stunning. Nice to have the option of those beaches for sure. Xx

Have you considered Chepstow? Now that the tolls for the Severn bridges have been abolished a lot of people commute from there.

Blondeissimo · 23/08/2022 18:32

I'd also highly recommend Portishead, but you need to be super quick...properties are in high demand. Especially those with views or on the marina. It's a lovely place, I grew up there and loved it.

Bookridden · 23/08/2022 19:02

I think Brislington often gets overlooked in these discussions. Close enough to the city to feel lively, good community spirit, great selection of primaries and a secondary that's just got Ofsted good and is improving rapidly. It's got some green space and has quite an arty feel to it. Worth checking out.
