Question about abs

Questionaboutabs · 18/08/2022 20:57

Serious question - how do you end up with abs like Kate Greville? Strict diet and daily intense work outs?

I have a stressful job and I can barely make time for a quick session at the gym. I would love to know how people manage it - I may learn some tips! (I probably need a new job tbh).

Inspired by the latest news coverage about the court case where Ryan Giggs wrote a poem.

Abs are made in the kitchen not the gym. So you need very little body fat to have visible ones.

Questionaboutabs · 18/08/2022 21:04

So how do you end up that slim? Strict diet? Body sculpting?

Omg that is so cringe! 😫😆

I would say I have a four pack, with the missing two sort of visible in the morning if I am a bit dehydrated and the lighting is correct 😁

I do one focussed 30min abs session a week but I also lift heavy three days a week and do three sessions of high intensity cardio, which all involve core strength and stabilisation to some extent.

However, if my diet is crappy (sometimes it seems like even for like a few days!), they will start to go into hiding! They do always say abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym. It’s refined sugar that seems to go straight to my waistline. I think every body will be different though.

Hop27 · 18/08/2022 22:18

14-19% body fat, or lower.
Clean eating, lots of strength work focusing on core and they are probably only visible in the morning, when your a little dehydrated in good lighting and focusing on tensing them. Most people don't walk around with a 6 pack all day. Look at coverage of the cross fit games, their ads come and depending on how they are breathing , moving etc. Those women will be the lower end of the scale body fat wise and are elite athletes.
I train 6 days a week, only have abs when my nutrition is really strict (ie don't have a life), I'm dehydrated and the lighting it on point. God knows I've tried.

I dunno I'm a size 20!

The only women I personally know with a six pack is actually one singular woman, she is 40, has a toddler - but crucially, she is a professional dancer. I've known her since we were 16 or so, she has always been a smaller than a size 6 and clearly her body is completely conditioned, she has always had fairly visible muscles (although weirdly, more visible now. Even at 16 and a size 4 I think she must have had a bit of puppy fat covering them!)

Correct. Diet is the most important part of it all. Low body fat level and regular exercise will do it.

Mostly diet, so no eating any old crap! Lots disvipline needed.

AmbushedByCake1 · 19/08/2022 19:01

Very low body fat. I have one friend with amazingly defined abs and she is militant about what she eats. Obv she works out but it's about getting that layer if fat off so you can see the muscle underneath.

Simonjt · 19/08/2022 19:06

Low body fat and exercise, some people are naturally more muscly so abs will show with slightly higher body fat, other people aren’t so need to be leaner.

Generally men need 6-12% body fat and women I think should aim for around 14-20%.

Some people work so they’re visible all the time, other people will cut at certain times of year to make them visible, like spring so they’re visible for the beach etc.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 19/08/2022 19:12

Low body fat and lots of weights and core work.

I have defined abs, not a 6 pack but they are visible. I do 3 abs sessions a week.

For some people it's just more defined

goshy · 19/08/2022 19:21

It's also shape & being incredibly strict food wise. I'm tall & even with an underweight BMI never had abs.

goshy · 19/08/2022 19:22

some people build muscles easier that others. I did loads of dancing as a kid/teen but would still have stick legs.

theemmadilemma · 19/08/2022 19:33

To have them? Core work, ab work.

To see them? All about getting the body fat low enough but also genetics play into it. Some will
never achieve a good one, some will find it easier.

PinkBuffalo · 19/08/2022 19:35

I live on junk and have just visible abs I work out hard at the gym several days a week
before now I had abs but was severely underweight
I am now bmi 20 so a healthy weight

FlowerArranger · 19/08/2022 19:43

If you are focused on VISIBLE abs, it's all about dieting and low body fat.

If you are interested in actual, real STRONG abs, it's exercise, and particularly exercise that targets a strong core. I'd recommend a daily plank (e.g. the Bowflex 3-minute plank), and Rebecca Louise's Best Abs workout. Both free on YouTube, and 15-20 minutes a day is all it takes.

The thing is though: having a strong core feels great and, for me at least, serves as a strong motivator to exercise and eat clean. It's difficult to describe, but feeling my abs and how strong they are is empowering.!

But WHAT do you have to do in the kitchen?!?

Love to hear what works for you @DownNative or @ChiefWiggumsBoy or anyone else with abs 😅

Letussee · 19/08/2022 19:49

Oh cross posted with some great advice from @FlowerArranger , thanks!

Watchthesunrise · 19/08/2022 23:55

But WHAT do you have to do in the kitchen?!?

Basically, eat dust and spinach. Make sure you measure out that spinach.

Have a violent, abusive and controlling boyfriend who would flip out if he caught you eating something he didn't approve of?

XenoBitch · 20/08/2022 00:24

Being under 40

AmbushedByCake1 · 20/08/2022 19:50

@XenoBitch not at all! My friend has a killer set and she's 50.

mummyof2boys30 · 20/08/2022 19:59

I do x2 30min classes a day, mix of cardio, weights and abs. Have visable abs for about 5 mins every morning and still rolls when i sit down. Im 5ft 8 and weigh 10st 3. All I want is abs but don't think il ever have them. Diet just isn't good enough and i could never stick to it
