My friend had no idea what I meant when I used this word - just wondering if it’s used widely or if it’s just used where I grew up.

It's included with the meaning "to scratch" in Joseph Wright's English Dialect Dictionary, as being used in various northern and south western counties of England.

The word is Germanic in origin - there are similar words in Danish "skramme" , "scratch" verb and noun, and dialect German "schrammen" meaning "to scratch".

Evidently was borrowed over the border from the West of England.
