TV licence at University Halls

I can see that TV licensing say that you need a TV licence in university but in practice do you need one.
My son watches Netflix and similar on his laptop, and can not watch the BBC if that's what makes the difference.
Do they check? How can they check if he doesn't let them look at his laptop?

I have a TV licence for his home address.

Bump. Same question!

SquigglePigs · 18/09/2022 21:04

You only need a license to watch live broadcast tv so if he's watching Netflix etc. then he doesn't need one anyway.

PuttingDownRoots · 18/09/2022 21:05

For Netflix... no. (Or prime, disney+, itv/channel4 catch up etc)

If he watches any iplayer or live TV he does.

he won't need one in halls of residence

Hillrunning · 18/09/2022 21:08

He doesn't need one if he won't be watching BBC or live broadcasting. Netflix, prime, Disney, apple tv all fine without a license.

If he does watch it they will know because you now have to sign in.

ArcticSkewer · 18/09/2022 21:10

oh, my mistake, technically he does if he's watching live TV in his room not the common room.
If he isn't watching live tv or bbc iplayer... and what person under 60 does ... then he doesn't need the licence.
Should he feel a desperate need to watch bbc he can watch Box of Broadcasts with his uni log in - it's all BBC archive available to Uni students

Drivebye · 18/09/2022 21:11

I don't think they do, see link here:

If you watch YouTube you need a TV licence? Not sure that's correct.

hotchocdrinker · 18/09/2022 21:17

For YouTube a licence is only required if you're watching stuff live, not for other stuff.

Only need a tv license to watch BBC, iPlayer or any love TV programming (regardless of channel iirr).
Although the queen's funeral and Related programming is exempt I believe,

Thanks all. My DS would probably say he's not planning to watch any BBC iplayer, but I would like him to be able to watch it if there is something good on and he changes his mind (and, lets face it, the bbc will only have a future if young people get into the habit of watching it). So, thanks drivebye for the MSE link - half way down it gives very useful info - apparently its ok to watch BBC iplayer on a portable device so long as it isn't plugged in at the time!!!!

Honestly, BoB (box of broadcasts) covers everything he could possibly want from the BBC if he suddenly feels a desperate need to watch it.
