Hello, I want to crochet my own baby blanket but I have never ever done it before. How do I start and what do I need.

Bella Coco has brilliant videos on you tube.

I taught myself using YouTube. Bella Coco is lovely and I always return to her. Lots of others once you look.
She explains really clearly and you can pause while you follow what she does.

Get some double knit wool and a crochet hook (I’d recommended a Clover Amour size 4) and start by using Bella Coco’s tutorials on YouTube.

Another tip is that English and American crochet terms are different, Bella Coco is UK based so she uses the English terms.
For instance, double crochet here is single crochet in US terms, English treble is US double.

If you are on Facebook, I find the crochet UK group and the bella coco group very helpful too!

The English and American terms for yarn weights are very different too.

If you find some old-fashioned books from not much later than the 90s, the pictures go a long way towards overcoming language issues. The dates are significant as I find the quality of instructive text declines sharply after that.

If you have a local craft group you'll probably find that people will be more than happy to help you get going with the basics, some people find it easier to learn that way rather than from a book or screen. Local yarn shops sometimes have drop in sessions and workshops too.

The Happy Hooker book is a great informative book for crochet - American but lots of good, clear instruction plus hints and tips and it includes some patterns.

When I was a beginner, I managed to make a blanket quite easily. Corner to corner blankets grow quickly. Starting is a bit tricky but then it gets easy and looks lovely.
As a total beginner, I found the granny square online tutorial by Jayda Institches the easiest to follow. I also like Bella Coco. I learned purely by watching YouTube tutorials and getting advice from a friend.
