Hi I've had back issues for about ten years. It started off as a bout of pain every year or so. Now it's every month or two and sometimes I struggle to walk the spasms are so painful. I saw the gp a few times and was referred each time to physio. It's been diagnosed as a bulging disc. So then I just started going private for physiotherapy. This year it's been near constant. I do yoga and Pilates and do physio exercises daily. Is it worth going back to gp? Is there anything more that could be done?

Or is it just exercises and pain meds ?

Most herniated discs do heal on their own, but yours sounds like a chronic problem. Have you considered chiropractic rather than, or in addition to, physio?

My first port of call for back problems is chiropractic - my lifestyle puts enormous strain on my back so I get problems from time to time and would also go chiro rather than physio.

It is worth checking out what type of treatment an individual chiro offers - I absolutely hate the bone-crunching type of treatment and have always sought out either a McTimoney practitioner (they use very subtle interventions) or one who practices in a more holistic way - the one I am currently seeing for example focusses on deep tissue trigger point kind of treatment but that's what I need for my particular injury.

Often chiro is thought of more for joints/bones but I find it invaluable for deep tissue and lower back issues - far more so than physio.
