Car insurance for Son - Can he be added to sisters car?

My son has his driving test soon. If he passes his test, how do I get him insured correctly?

My daughter has a ford fiesta which she rarely drives which he can use for school etc. She is the named owner of the vehicle and has insurance on the car with myself and my husband as named drivers.

I am trying to find out if he can be a named driver on her policy (can't speak to anyone on the phone at Aviva, so waiting for email response )😡

Is it possible to have two insurance policies on one car? i.e. can I take out a policy just for him to drive the car, or is this illegal? It seems that it is unusual to get insurance for brother on sisters car. Has anyone managed to do this, and how?

He just gets added as another named driver.

You can’t insure the same car twice.

Mamamia7962 · 18/08/2022 12:44

It depends on whether he will then be the main driver of his sister's car rather than being a named driver who is only driving the car occasionally because logically only one person can be a main driver and this sounds like it will be your son which would make the insurance void if he was found out.

Thanks for the replies can he be the main driver of a car which is not owned by him?

If he will be the main driver then you're commiting fraud by putting him down as a named driver only.

Soontobe60 · 18/08/2022 12:59

You have to state who the main driver of the vehicle is. My and DHs cars are both in my name. He’s the main driver on his car, me on mine.
When DD passed her test she was a named driver on my car although she lived at a different address. She only drove the car occasionally. When she bought her own car she went down as the main driver and I was a named driver. That brought her insurance down a bit.

Yes. You just tell the insurance company what the facts are.

Finawelesca · 18/08/2022 13:04

I have my own car and own insurance. Ds is learning to drive and uses my car for practise. He has a completely separate insurance cover on my car so if he crashes it does not affect my policy in any way shape or form. Once he passes he can also upgrade the insurance to cover that. It is with Veygo (Admiral) also Marmalade do it and Collingwood. You can insure someone for a couple of hours to weeks to months I believe. Ds will be going back to uni in October and I am the main driver.

It does look suspicious naming him as the main driver as your DD is the owner. However, I would check which is the cheaper way to insure the car, ie his own stand alone policy or adding to hers.

I bought a car once when heavily pregnant and they actually registered the car into Dh's name. I was livid as he now technically owned 2 cars and I was the named driver on one of them.

Finawelesca · 18/08/2022 13:08

Sorry, I should clarify, he will be the main driver so it needs to be changed to him being the main driver if that is the case. I blame the menopause. My brain is fried. I got confused for a moment.

My husband bought me my car so he is registered owner of the vehicle but i'm the main driver.

No it doesn't. I worked in insurance, you can have the entire family insured on one policy on one car, it's not a problem, only one person is allowed to won it though. You advise the company which of the drivers will be the main one - this doesn't have to be the policyholder.

QforCucumber · 18/08/2022 13:16

Policy holder and Main driver can be the same or can be different - it is not a problem.

Thank you all for your help. We are currently using veygo as learner insurance so will give them a ring to see what to do.

We are not trying to do anything dodgy, just wanted to make sure we have correct insurance.

Also make sure you tell them if he will be using to drive to school and/or work. Even if occasional you should tell them so that can decide if changes the policy terms.

Thanks will do. Think I've got to grips with it now. Going to make my son the registered keeper then take out insurance in his name with us and sister as named drivers. She seldom drives it now as lives in a city with expensive parking now she is working.
