Reassurance needed - sickness

DS10 started being sick at 8pm, very unlike him, last time he was sick was about 4yrs ago. He's being violently sick every 30 mins, with uncontrollable diarrhoea at the same time. When to worry?

Is he drinking water? The main concern is dehydration. Even if he doesn't keep it down for long he still needs to drink

He's managing sips of water..I have dioralyte but that makes him gag and then immediately throw up. It's just horrible to see him so ill.

I would probably stick with just water then. If he was still being violently ill in the morning you could ring the doctors for some advice. Unless he is dehydrated or it goes on longer than 24 hours I wouldn't worry to much. It could be food poisening

Thank you. Just needed a voice of reason in the middle of the night. The night seems to go on forever when they are ill!

Yeah it's horrible to see them ill and the tiredness doesn't help. I hope he feels better soon and you all manage some sleep.

I’d try a bit of blackcurrant squash if he can tolerate it, for a sugar boost.
keep an eye on how much he is drinking, sips are better than gulps, and weeing.
Ice lollies or ice cubes to suck if you’ve got them.

Oh it’s horrible, my sympathies to you. For context, my DD age 3 had the worst vomity bug I’ve dealt with a few months ago, couldn’t keep water down for long and this went on for just over 24hrs. I spoke to GPs as she was very lethargic and not herself but they assessed it as in the normal range for a bug, to hang on another 6hrs. Actually I’ll see if I can post a helpful info leaflet they sent me. They advised giving diluted apple juice which is what they do in hosp, 5ml every 5 min. Appreciate he’s older but we used a calpol syringe and this helped her space out sips.

Thank you both. He stopped at 4am, woke at 6.30 and started again but it's not as violent today. I can remember syringing 5mls of diorayte in to his brother mouth when he was really ill when he was tiny.

Now to tackle the small mountain of washing.

Poor DS, he's still got terrible diarrhoea and been sick a few more times.

cuminpotato · 18/08/2022 20:04

How's he doing now? poor thing, sounds really horrible

Wineandcornflakes · 19/08/2022 16:00

Thanks. He's a bit better. Not been sick today but still has upset stomach. He's drinking but nothing to eat yet.

We ended up seeking medical attention as he couldn't keep any fluids in. Was prescribed Metronidazole which seems to be making him sick again. Will see how today goes and if not will have to speak to someone about it. It's been a very long few days!
