Best chapter books to read to 5yo

We're at the stage where DD5 is reading basic books mostly competently (albeit with some sounding out still) but likes to have more complex stories and books read to her by us. I think we ought to get into chapter books, where we can read a chapter an night to her at bedtime.
Does anyone have any suggestions beyond the obvious Roald Dahl classics?

Mango and Bambang
Milly Molly Mandy
Polly and the Puffin
the Claude books
Olga da Polga
Pippi Longstocking (and other Astrid Lindgren books)
Bad Nana
My Naughty Little Sister

Flat Stanley?

can you take her to the library or a book shop to see which appeal?

My 6 year old son loves Frank Cottrell-Boyce, especially like the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang ones. Some of the concepts were a bit tricky but he got the gist and we talked through it together.

He also really liked Paddington, Winnie-the-Pooh, some Dick King Smith, some Roald Dahl.

The 'Sophie' books by Dick King-Smith were a huge favourite here at that age, especially 'Sophie's Snail'. They are about an animal-loving feisty girl so I think DD2 really identified with her!

Pippi Longstocking was also a hit, although they may just have been humouring me.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone to read to her - they do illustrated books that are BEAUTIFUL. Both of mine have copies.

Also Enid Blyton - famous five, secret seven, Mallory Towers etc. I have found sometimes the ‘older’ the book the more likely they are to enjoy it.

The Magic Ballerina series by Darcy Bussell is one of my DD(5) favourites.

Also love the Isadora Moon and Mirabelle books by Harriet Muncaster.

Mummy Fairy books by Sophie Kinsella are also firm favourites.

We finished the Worst Witch series then moved on to Harry Potter.

DS is 5 and this year we have read Charlotte's Web, The Butterfly Lion, The Enchanted Woods, Peter and Wendy, Alices Adventures in Wonderland, and we are currently reading The Borrowers, on top of a few Dahl's this year too, Next on our list is Pippi Longstockings, The Worst Witch, and The Mouse and the Child.

Also I have a MA in Childrens Literature and this is my passion so I'm really excited to see what others have to say too, some great suggestions already posted.

Id also recommend reading Lucy Mangan's Bookworm for inspiration, and The Read Aloud Family (if you can look past the religious aspects).

The Faraway Tree series. My two loved those and they are easy to read over and over again.

turquoise1988 · 17/08/2022 20:45

The Daisy chapter books by Kes Gray are absolutely brilliant, a real laugh - even for adults!

YukoandHiro · 17/08/2022 20:46

Dick King Smith! I'd totally forgotten about him. I must have read The Sheep Pig 100 times when I was young :)

Some great ideas here, thank you!

Many of the things mentioned above, as well as Michael rosen’s books- such as fluff the farting fish. These quickly become independent readers.
also pip bird’s naughtiest unicorn. Enough glitter/ rainbows to appease my dd’s girly side, with a dose of humour.

DelurkingAJ · 17/08/2022 20:59

DS6 is currently enthralled by Little House in the Big Woods and its sequels.

Modern hits have been The Boy Who Grew Dragons (and sequels) and Toto the Ninja Cat books.

Newuser82 · 17/08/2022 21:33

Teddy Robinson is a beautiful, gentle, slightly satirical treat.

EcoCustard · 20/08/2022 06:55

Mrs Pepperpot was loved here, Gobbolino the Witches Cat, Charlotte’s Web. Rabbit & Bear and Mudpuddle Farm series are great and mine like to jump and read parts of it. Dd5 is enjoying having Olga De Polga read to her at the moment as she really wants a Guinea Pig.

Yorkshiregold · 20/08/2022 07:42

Yes to Isadora Moon books by Harriet Muncaster and also Amelia Fang books by Laura Ellen Anderson

KingscoteStaff · 20/08/2022 08:25

How interesting - these are nearly all top favourites in our Year 3 book corner!
