How do I get the stink of wee out of my carpet?

Our living room carpet has been looking really grubby for a while so on Monday I got out the carpet cleaner machine and cleaned it. It looks a lot better but the whole room now stinks of wee 🤢 DH reckons we can't have cleaned up DS' accidents thoroughly enough from potty training him and me washing the carpet has reawakened the smell 🤢

What the hell can I do??

Is the carpet totally dry yet?

I’d get several tubs of bicarbonate of soda. Sprinkle it all over before you go to bed then hoover up in the morning, or better yet go out and leave it for as long as possible.

you could even put a few drops of essential oil in the bicarb when you buy them to add scent, the oil would be fully absorbed by the time you sprinkled it on at night so wouldn’t mark the carpet.

Yup, bicarb

or get one of the enzyme-based urine-destroying sprays - sold in pet shops and also alongside inco products (often labelled for mattresses). Check for colour fastness.

also might be worth adding zoflora or an essential oil to the water tank when using a carpet cleaning machine in future

It is as far as I can tell, it holds water really well though so I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was still damp deep down in the pile.

I'll try bicarb, thanks!

If dry try biological washing powder, massage in then leave on for few hours and Hoover.works fantastic for sick and milk spills too.

I had the same problem, a mixture of wee & gone off milk after I'd cleaned it with a vax cleaner. I bought stuff called Simple solutions a cat wee cleaner from Amazon, sprayed liberally over the carpet & left to dry. Smell went & never came back.

I've never found bicarb makes any difference. Only thing that has ever worked is zoflora linen in a strong solution. No safe with cats around though.

This…
Rug Doctor 70037 Urine Eliminator, 500 ml amzn.eu/d/11aoiOQ

we used it on our sofa (a few times) when we took the leap from nappies to pants with DS1.

Also, anything with bleach makes wee smell worse - learned this the hard way!

That's what I've always used and thought it worked, until now 😒

Following closely because we’re in exactly the same boat after I had the brilliant idea of cleaning the carpet in DD’s room.

@Furryscoob Was it the Simple Solutions version for cats or general pets that worked the miracle?

PuttingOnMyBestBra · 17/08/2022 20:08

Don't massage anything in, you will be spreading the surface area. Dab it.
Use salt, then use bicarb for the smell, let it dry completely in between the two
Use a clean white cloth and cold water
Don't rush it

Furryscoob · 17/08/2022 20:46

@SomethingNastyInTheBallPool
It's the one for cats, dog ones not as effective.

LemonApplePeach · 17/08/2022 21:25

There are special odour neutralisers you can get.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 17/08/2022 22:51

@Furryscoob Thank you! Will give it a go.
