Total novice when it comes to rail use. We don't live near a train station and very rarely use rail to travel.

however, Dp has a funeral to attend miles away first week of September. He needs to go and come back In one day due to work and kids etc. He would drive but it's quite a long drive and he'll be tired after a week of 12 hour shifts. Plus it'll leave me without a car. I would drive him to train station 20 miles away 6am and come back, pick him up the same night.

thinking about getting the train. How far in advance are rail strikes planned? Will they likely be finished by the first week of September? They don't just randomly strike last minute do they?

apologies if this is the most stupid thing to ask. I just know little about the current rail strikes.

tia 😊

Everything you need to know about the August rail strikes

18th - 20 August - for big ones.

19 for London underground.

They do announce in advance but no idea if any more are planned for September yet so you'll have to keep an eye out in press.

www.nationalrail.co.uk/ best site for information and travel planning - though www.thetrainline.com/information/cheap-train-tickets better for cheaper tickets.

Thank you. We are just panicking a bit how he'll get there. The obvious would be to drive but totally leaves me in the lurch without a car plus he gets really tired driving!

Did a quick search on national rail line for first week September - route we did recently and advanced ticket sales are suspended and one train operator has still to confirm timetable.

So best advice - check your route for dates you need and keep an eye on news.

If there are issue are coaches an option?

They may not be depending on where you are and will likely take a bit longer.

This is one big operator - but there are others I think.

2 weeks notice has to be legally given of any strike action. So if you get within 13 days of the funeral and no further strike has been notified, there will be no strike on the day you intend to travel.

Thank you all!! I don't think there any long drive bus services from where I live. I've looked up national express and don't even seem to have any picks up near us. We are right out in the sticks!
