Are you allowed a bum bag and a backpack for carry on?

I am due to go on holidays in a few weeks. I don't want to leave everything to the last minute. I saw some people with a bum bag on tiktok but strapped sideways around their chest. It's such a fantastic idea to have a wallet and valuables close by.

I think I would like to do this for my holidays. I would like a large bumbag strapped around my chest for passport and wallets and other paper that we need for the cruise line too.

I'm just wondering if a bumbag will be allowed along with a backpack for carry on luggage?

It might depend on your airline. Worst case scenario, make sure your bumbag fits into your backpack if they are strict.

I flew in May and had a small crossbody handbag (for phone, purse, tickets) and a backpack for carry-on.

Also I really hate the word bumbag. There must be a better name for them! (No, not fannypack either 😄)

nottalot · 17/08/2022 10:24

Sounds okay. I imagine if you had the bumbag under a sweater it wouldn't be any different to just having a bit of a big stomach?

nottalot · 17/08/2022 10:25

Tummybag would be much worse though Grin

I guess it depends what you mean by a ‘large bumbag’. I can’t imagine your have a problem with something small and flat enough just to hold passports and some other items, but if it’s the size of a small backpack then you might run into problems. I’d store the bumbag in my backpack for boarding to be on the safe side.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 17/08/2022 10:27

It entirely depends on the airline. If it's a strict one item only rule, just make sure you can squeeze the bum bag in the backpack for the times you need to only have one item. I do similar with my small cross body bag.

WaltzingWaters · 17/08/2022 10:27

usually it should be fine if it’s quite a small one, but does depend on how stingy the airline is. Make sure it’s either hidden under coats/jumpers and/or can fit in your backpack and it’ll be fine

Honeyroar · 17/08/2022 10:28

Should be fine with most airlines. But as someone said, make sure you can fit the bum bag into the backpack if need be.

Mariposista · 17/08/2022 10:36

Wear the bumbag and put a really baggy top over it. I once did this with an iver the shoulder handbag (put it on under my dress, once on the flight, quick trip to the loo, whip the dress off, remove handbag, dress back on, back to seat). I know all the tricks in the book 🤣

I have oft circumvented easyJet's one piece of luggage rules by having a backpack and a small cross body bag. I used to keep an old World Duty Free carrier bag folded up in my backpack and then just drop my small bag into it to board.

I was going to say this too. If your bum bag fits in your backpack, problem solved.
The only way you are going to know is to read your airline's hand luggage rules.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 17/08/2022 10:50

Usually the rule on auto planes is only one carry-on bag and so the advice for carrying an additional handbag/ bumbag etc from your main carry on luggage is usually to make sure it can fit inside the main bag and be carried onto the flight as one bag if needed. If you can’t combine all of your bags into one bag which is within the size limits they can in theory make you check one of the bags into the hold, at a cost.

I’ve found that if you are flying long-haul or with a more premium airline they don’t usually make a big deal of this by making you put your small bag into the bigger one to check that it fits but on budget airlines like Ryanair they are generally much stricter as check-in luggage is usually an additional cost and will want all carry-on luggage to be combined into one bag and they will be stricter on the size down to exact mms!

I can't picture a bumbag strapped round your chest? Wouldn't it be more comfortable around your waist?

mondaytosunday · 17/08/2022 10:52

Depends on airline. Whether it's the kind of bag you described or a hand bag if the airline says 'one piece of carry on' they mean one piece. You will have to take it off to go through security- because it is small and strapped tightly to you is irrelevant.

It's the latest thing to be in with the kids it seems. Bum bags are now worn cross body. Annoys the hell out of me 😂

Styperbolic · 17/08/2022 11:01

Tum Bag is actually a great name 😍
I think I'll start using it. My teens will love that

alwaysfactor50 · 17/08/2022 11:05

I've a small cross body bag I'll make sure fits in my rucksack!

SeaBoat · 17/08/2022 11:21

Thank you for all of the replies. I will make sure the bum bag will fit into my carry on.

Like other posters, I have a small cross body bag for cards, passports, phone etc that will fit into a bigger bag. If I'm checking in luggage, I try to carry as little as possible (have never 'lost' luggage, so maybe a bit complacent) whereas if I'm hand luggage only, I've already got a max sized bag.

Before covid, I always seemed to get copped in the queue as one of the people who had to put my hand luggage in the hold, but the cross body bag never got taken.

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 17/08/2022 13:03

Ive never actually used it, but I have a knee length gilet with at least 10 pockets. Might that be a solution, as a gilet is part of your clothing not something extra
