Just been hit by a car in Co-op

I've just been hit by a car reversing into me in a co-op car park while I wasn't moving, waiting to go into a space that someone was leaving. It's only a small car park (one line of cars) so as I was waiting to reverse into this space a bloke reversed out of his and hit me.

He admitted fault, messaged me his details and said that we shouldn't go through insurance and he'll take care of any costs. He gave me his name and sent me his email address and it looks like he's a partner in a fairly high key professional company. Because of this (and the fact he has a 22 plate car) I'm thinking he's not short of a bob or two and would rather avoid the headache of going through insurance.

The damage isn't huge, a fairly sizeable dent to my back bumper, his car was fine. My DP is knowledgeable about cars and says it shouldn't take much to fix it just cosmetic.

I have never been in any kind of accident before, is it sensible to just send him the quotes and have him pay for it? I have high anxiety and could do without going through all of it too!!

Thank you for any advice.

@TokenGinger If being neurotic is your idea of safety then go right ahead! A tiny little bump is not going to damage a decent car seat but then most of us have decent ones. Who mentioned rear/forward facing?! You've just made that part up! You seem to have convinced yourself that you're the only person who does ERF! No, you're really, really not! 🤣

i would never not go through insurance. I need a car. Going through insurance ensures I have a hire car whilst mine is getting repaired. It's not just the cost. It's the inconvenience

Id take it to a reputable body shop type garage and get a quote from them. If he's happy to pay it, let him and get them to fix it privately without informing your insurance. Your premiums will go up if you report it to them, if though it wasn't your fault.

My DH was hit from behind whilst stationary. Had some injuries, back of car needed serious repairs, the other insurer paid out in full, including for time he had off work, physio for his back, new car seat etc and their driver took full responsibility for it. He stayed with the same insurer when he had to renew as it wasn't all settled and they put his premium up. When he questioned them it was only because he had made a claim, even though they admitted that he was totally not at fault AND it was meet in full by the other insurer so didn't cost them any money. As someone has already said, they put up your premiums just for having an accident, regardless of if you were at fault or not.

Oh FFS. I'm quite certain I am not the only one who rear faces. I was just making a point that people take different levels of risks when it comes to car safety, and providing an example of that.

I'm not judging anybody for their choices, but you're certainly judging me for choosing to take precautions which says more about you than me.

Honestly, I'm not neurotic. I just see so often on car seat safety pages that car seats should be replaced in the event of bumps, so I guess I just take that advice quite literally. Especially in these instances where I'm not at fault and it would not be at any additional cost to myself.

It depends on how reliable the other guy is. My sister had the same happen and initially agreed. When she took her car the next day to the garage, she sent the quote to the lady who then refused to pay!
Ended up going through insurance but just be aware insurance expects you to tell them within 24h of an accident.

Update: I got quotes, forwarded them to him, and he's paid up :) All's well that ends well!

To the PP that said I shouldn't be driving, I've never been in this situation before and was asking advice on here as a naïve person. Yes I have anxiety but I don't feel that should preclude me from driving :)

Thank you again everyone x

Id let him pay, it sounds like a chips away kind of bump that if you were at fault you wouldn't bother repairing.

I've never known anyone ring the insurance and go hey I've reversed into a plant pot just to let you know.

😃
