Very painful teeth/tooth. What could it be?

I've got awful pain along my lower left teeth. All the teeth hurt but I think it's one tooth in particular where it started as for a few months it's been quite sensitive. The pain is radiating across my head and nose and I can't eat on that side at all. I haven't actually eaten at all apart from a little porridge this morning. Got an emergency dentist app this aftwrnoon and there's nothing obvious, xrays looks fine. My teeth down there are heavily filled. They've given me penicillin, I really hope it works else I may be yanking out my teeth myself. Any ideas what it could be if nothing is showing on xray. I really thought there would he an obvious cavity or something as that what it's been filling like. If I've eaten anything sweet, I've had pain in one tooth before this all started.

Do you grind your teeth when your sleeping? Or clench them? I've recently been given a mouthpiece to wear overnight & have become aware of clenching my teeth as I wake up.

I haven't been told that I do! The pain is throbbing and also painful to put teeth together

Thus is pretty much identical to my recent situation. Pain in upper tooth and numbness in my face. Got an emergency appointment but x ray showed no sign of decay. He thought I had a gum infection and prescribed amoxicillin. He also said I have moderate gum disease which is not good and I need to get it under control so few appointments with hygienist needed. The antibiotics seemed to work but I've been having a few twinges in the tooth again so now got another prescription for Metrodinazole which I'm hoping will sort it.

Could be an abscess. See a dentist urgently.

I had something very similar last year and the dentist suggested it might be a crack in the tooth that wasn't visible.

Apparently they don't necessarily show up on an X-ray, something about alignment of the x-ray vs where the crack is. I had a fairly large and old filling in the tooth and apparently this can cause cracking over time (I also grind my teeth which doesn't help). Truth be told I was a bit sceptical but he excavated the old filling and put a new white one in and it's much better and also looks much nicer.

To add to the fun I also have trigeminal neuralgia and since the filling was changed it certainly seems to get triggered a lot less.

I had it done privately if it makes any difference.

This is probably totally random but do you have a lot of citrus? That makes my teeth sensitive.

Oinkypig · 16/08/2022 21:12

It’s really tricky if you’ve a row of filled teeth and not quite sure which one is the cause. If there isn’t anything on the X-ray you almost have to wait until it locates to one tooth which is rubbish. There is nothing I hated more when someone came in with toothache and when you look in there are 5+ teeth that could be the source and you have to explain to the patient until they localise the pain you would literally be guessing. I hope you feel better soon.

OP has been to the dentist earlier today & had an X-ray which was clear.

Did you even read the OP ?

I'm not a dentist but have "enjoyed" an array of dental problems. From what you've described it sounds like an infection, not all show up on x-rays so hopefully the penicillin works for you, I ended up on a combination of antibiotics as it didn't work for me but each infection is different and many have success with penicillin. To find out what tooth was infected they tapped each one in line and when they got to the "one" we all knew about it. May be worth investing in a decent mouth wash specially for gum problems. Good luck, I know only too well what it feels like.

McConkeysPlate · 16/08/2022 22:25

Sinusitis?

I hope so. How quickly should I feel a difference if it is an infection after taking Anti-B?

Thank you. I think I know the tooth as in the last few months its been extra sensitive although at the moment, all the teeth hurt along there.
