Customised School top too big

School ware company came out to the school and measured kids for a top for this school year. Absolutely no communication with parents regarding this, only heard about it a few weeks after, school gave parents phone number and name to the company to communicate with us directly. Collected DS's and it is enormous, he is 16 and I would normally order a mens small for him this is a large. Company will not change it as customised. Anything I can do? It's only for one year and he will not grow into it.

Either say they measured him wrong and ask them to change or just let him wear it big if they did their heels in. It won't matter that it's a bit big.

I have never heard of a company going in and measuring students though. Is this a private school?

No not private but we are in Ireland. The company were originally local to the school but moved a long way away, only accessible by car. So I assume that is why they came in. It's really enormous, he couldn't wear his coat over it, his coat is size small. It wouldn't matter so much if it was a hoody but it's a thin kind of half zip training top, that they have to wear every day. He looks swamped in it.

Can you check with other parents to see if anyone needs a bigger one as theirs has come up small, and do a swap? If the company have messed up sizing generally, there may be other with the same issue.

Contact the school principle/ board of management, they tendered the company to supply the school and now the company are refusing to provide what you paid for, while they may be refusing to change the top for you the thought of pissing off the school and losing the tender could help change their mind. Don't let this go, you've a little time to fight before school starts. I hated that there was only one supplier of uniform for my sons school, it was expensive and not great quality.

MILLYmo0se · 15/08/2022 11:28

Send the company a photo of your son in the top and point out that it doesnt exactually make a good advertisment for the 'customised' aspect for their service doesnt? What school would want to use them in future if they will not rectify what is obviously their mistake, your child has clearly not dropped 2 sizes since they measured him!

If it was me I'd look up the consumer goods act or consumer protections where you live, then quote relevant sections in a written reply. It's fairly standard that goods must be of merchantable quality and fit for purpose, and match the description provided, they measured, it's their mistake and the goods aren't fit for purpose. Generally even if they've written something about consumer protections not applying these are rights that a company can't legally exclude you from having. They probably get to decide if they replace or refund, but they should have to rectify their mistake.

Thanks guys, I rang again and they will get someone else to ring me tomorrow. The thing is had I brought him with me I'd have tried it on him and refused to pay, now I'm stuck. Thought it would be easier to go early while he was away and not moaning about it.
