What toys do you 5-6 year old boys play with most?

Looking for ideas of toys to keep my DS interested for more than 5 mins!
he loves his Super Mario figures and play sets but is maybe a bit bored of them as he's playing with them less often now.
he struggles with motor skills so Lego etc he finds too hard and gets frustrated/gives up

Cars. Lots of cars. Remote controlled ones, hot wheels, some a bit bigger. Buildings for cars like garages, especially ones where they can go down ramps fast. Also lots of track to drive them along.

Nerf guns/plastic swords/thor hammer...you get the picture. He is 6.5 and likes to have battles with the neighbour's little boy.

Lego if DS2 (2) is napping.

Board games, all the board games (Ticket to Ride is the current go to) and cricket with his brother in the garden.

LEGOs, knex, magnets

Marbles & marble runs? Start off with one marble run & a build. You can build some fabulous constructions. Kept DS busy for hours.

Learning Resources make things like a working (plastic) power tool to do & undo nuts & bolts.

They do big cogs & wheel sets too, but time spent on them is a bit more finite.

Lego, Jurassic world stuff, nerf, marble run, jigsaws, magnetic tiles, board games, kinetic sand. He's recently gone back to role play as well - he loves playing cafes, pilots etc. Oh and and pretending to be Sonic!

WishUponAStar88 · 14/08/2022 13:20

Craft stuff (not really a toy but a favourite!)
Lego
Hotwheel type cars
Marble run

But he’d far rather be in the garden playing football/ running about or on a bike ride than playing with toys.

Ukulele, drum kit, puppet theatre

Our DS loves

imaginext Batman toys.

Transformers

Marvel figures

He loves Lego. I see you say your Ds struggles a bit.
You could start with the younger sets and do it together where he helps tell you where the pieces go to start with and he does the easier bits, loads of encouragement and work up a bit. Practice is good.

Playing footie.

DS has just turned 5, we have been working on his fine motor skills after his reception teacher highlighted them. He has just moved on to Lego but still enjoys duplo, which is easier to handle. Might that be an option? He also loves vehicles of any kind, and play dough .

We also bought him a couple of toys designed to help his fine motor skills, a threading one was popular.

newroundhere · 27/08/2022 20:35

DS also sometimes gets frustrated with lego and still enjoys playing with his duplo. To be honest he only really wants the ipad or reads books.

DN is obsessed with Goo Jit Zu toys, stretchy superheroes with marbles and stuff in... almost 6.

Gravitrax was a present at age 5 and is still a fave at age 7.
