When did your child start using deodorant?

My DS just turned 8 smells of BO. He has for a while before the heatwave. He's a total soap dodger so I thought it was just that but we finally got him into the habit of thoroughly washing every morning. It's sometimes hard to check as I'm dealing with DD now 5 who has challenging behaviours so I know he doesn't always do it. But this summer we have been getting him to shower before bed and he still wakes up smelling. I appreciate it's super hot and I imagine his hormones are getting themselves into gear too. I've been trying to avoid deodorant as I imagine his skin is too delicate for it 🤷🏿‍♀️ and have resolved to get him to shower before bed and wash in morning but he still smells not so much and it's much stronger by the day's end.

I started to use deodorant when I was in Year 6, he's going into Year 4. Is it too early for him? For those parents with DC that do, what brands do you use?
Thanks for reading. Not the most interesting of thread topics Blush

9 I think

cookiecreammmpie · 14/08/2022 12:29

Around 8. If he smells of BO, he needs it, I wouldn't worry about the age.

MbatataOwl · 14/08/2022 12:32

DD has been using antiperspirant since she was 8 years old. I buy her Dove or Simple .

My kids use this, available in Boots
bionsen.uk/

PestoPasghetti · 14/08/2022 12:37

Wow, I can't believe children need it so soon?! I think I was 12 before I started using deodorant. I would think anti-perspirant is the way to go though, as deodorant is basically just a perfume to mask the smell isn't it?

FlyingSaucerss · 14/08/2022 12:38

About 9, and yes showering isn’t enough as they will still smell my dd would smell if she didn’t use any even after a shower..

ImissChametz · 14/08/2022 13:44

Agree with @cookiecreammmpie

My dd started at the age of 9.

Yes, I meant anti-perspirant not deodorant.

Thanks for suggestions and comments. Yes, I'll get him started as washing alone isn't working.
Thanks all Smile

Mine have all used it from around 8. 2 of them needed it at that stage! The other I wanted to get into the habit of putting it on every day (ASD and instilling new routine is tricky, so wanted it in place before it was needed). There are plenty of tween-safe roll-ons around. Bionsen is great! But any aluminium free is good to go for too. He doesn’t need to suffocate himself with lynx or anything :)

NoWordForFluffy · 14/08/2022 13:48

I've recently bought some Dr Scrubbington's for DD who's just 9.

Greenfrog78 · 14/08/2022 13:51

About 8 for both my boys even though they have a bath or shower daily. Both started puberty early.

purplewolfie · 14/08/2022 13:52

I'd also recommend Sanex shower gel. Worked for us!

Mariposista · 14/08/2022 14:39

Forget age, kids develop at different rates. Get him showering in the morning - you sweat in bed!

Lightning020 · 14/08/2022 14:42

About age 12.

PeekAtYou · 14/08/2022 14:43

It's very common for 8yo to wear deodorant. Lynx is very popular.

JonSnowedUnder · 14/08/2022 14:59

My 8yo needs it, however his 10yo brother doesn't (he has started using it now that his brother is just to get into the routine).

Goldmember · 14/08/2022 15:02

My DDs had roll-on at 9. They weren't overly smelly but it was to pre empty the puberty BO.

serenghetti2011 · 14/08/2022 15:03

Just because one person didn’t need it at 12 doesn’t mean other kids aren’t the same, not sure what’s with the shock!!

my older 2 were in high school
my 3rd son developed early hair, greasy skin, smell etc about 9 I think so he used deodorant then and it makes a difference
my youngest is 11 so I think will be using it soon.

I developed young too, it’s hard as you feel like you’re the only one and a child really to be going through these things.

babysgotthespends · 14/08/2022 15:21

Showering in the morning is definitely preferable. I'll start getting him into the habit now. I'm going to try and avoid Lynx until he discovers it himself. I'm a secondary school teacher!

My 10 yr old dd started needing it around age 8. She started with scrubbingtons and now has a few salt of the earth ones. She smells strongly quite quickly if she forgets! On the other hand my eldest ds is nearly 12 and has only just started needing it in the hot weather, he is using scrubbingtons at the moment but will look for a more 'grown up' one as don't think he will want to bring that out in the changing room at school!

Whatwouldscullydo · 14/08/2022 15:48

Around 8 I think for both. Started off with a green people roll on. Now they use adult cream sticks. 11 +15 now.

Figured it doesn't hurt to get them used to a hygiene routine before it really becomes something they have to deal with on top of all the other body changes.

By the time you smell them the kids at school have probably smelt them for ages. It seems daft to let it get to that point because of arbitrary age cut offs from parents who let's face it we do t even remember when we started using it.

Although personally I definitely remember my mum being obsessed with reaching certain ages amd stages before I was allowed things and it left me worried I'd be smelling or the only one without something etc so I'm careful to try and not do the same with my kids.

Sparklybutold · 14/08/2022 19:58

DS 12

Sartre · 14/08/2022 20:00

Mine are 10, 11 and 12 and don’t wear it yet. They don’t need it, they don’t smell yet.
