can anyone water the wildlife with me?

it is absolutely parched here. The council grass was cut to the ground and usually it is full of flowers and higher within a few days but there are no flowers, no green, just brown dry.
I've been picking up glass bottles as they are a fire risk anyway but I'm assuming other areas are like this.

I have frozen some fruit in water in tupperware boxes and put it out on the local green, I have bowls of water in my front and back garden but I was thinking of taking some more tupperware boxes and filling them with water for the Bees, hedgehogs and whoever else would like it.

We found a dehydrated hedgehog this summer and sent it to a rescue. it was so dehydrated that his poor little eyes had sunken in.

They had him for a few days and he seemed to get better but he unfortunately passed away anyway, despite their efforts.

It really upset me and I've been filling up my bowls but I'm going to try to get round the brown field and put boxes of water down in all the hedges.

they have to be shallow or have something in there for insects and creatures to fly out.

posted on aibu too.

Great idea OP. 👍🏻♥️

Babymamaroon · 14/08/2022 12:42

Great idea OP! I'll go and out more water out front. I've refreshed the water in the back an hour ago but it's so hot I'll check it again.

Please rain soon. I've never known dryness like it.

SilentHedges · 14/08/2022 13:51

I always leave water out for the hedgehogs, foxes, whoever needs it and all year round. It's a large plant pot dish about 30cms diameter and a few inches deep. I leave water in front garden too.

Bees need a drink, but can't swim, so fill something like a tupperwear with shingle or stones, and pour water into it. That way they can reach the water without drowning.

Leave water out please everyone, animals are in serious trouble.

We’ve got communal gardens and I siesta have a big bowl out. The badgers can drain it in one so it’s getting refilled often. I have sugar water on me in a key ring for bees, and ended up giving a very thirsty rhino beetle a cap cup of water the other week. I know it’s hard to imagine a beetle having a grateful face but he definitely did.

Ammonites · 14/08/2022 13:57

I always do this in a shallow dish with pebbles in. Here’s a thread bump for the wildlife.

Hazelthecat · 14/08/2022 14:01

I've put water in a frisbee!

ParvuliThankYouDebbie · 14/08/2022 14:02

I’ve done this all around our bit of land, quite a big plot. I have never seen anything like it - the containers of water get absolutely mobbed - hedgehogs and foxes at night, insects too and the amount of birds that have visited is huge. I looked out at 7am this morning to see a veritable flock of blue tots and great tits almost queuing up for one of them. Also the different kinds of birds ‘sharing’ them at the same time which I’m sure wouldn’t normally happen. And I’ve never seen goldfinches and green finches on our usual bird baths before but they’re regular visitors atm. For anyone doing this, if there’s nothing shallow then putting some stones in a deeper container works so nothing gets trapped in there and can climb out.

DownNative · 14/08/2022 14:39

Good idea - I've rocks in my bird bath too!

Babymamaroon · 14/08/2022 14:40

I've just put out a staircase from an old dolls house so any little creatures can climb out. Great suggestion for rocks...I'll go and add some too

RedBonnet · 14/08/2022 14:43

We have foxes visiting and left a bowl of water out in a metal dish. Foxy stole the dish lol. But yes, we have several different setups for birds, bees, hedgehogs and foxes

preservesandreserves · 14/08/2022 22:40

it's so good to hear people are putting water out. Alot of the smaller streams have dried up around here at the moment. some usually do in summer but not as bad as this year. It's quite terrifying.

@preservesandreserves
you’re so caring 💐

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 14/08/2022 22:45

Weve been keeping the bird bath topped up and putting some smaller pots of water out for other insects. The foxes have been drinking from the bird bath

Thesearmsofmine · 14/08/2022 22:48

We have been putting a little water in our turf tray for the wildlife, the birds have been living it.

mrsjackrussell · 14/08/2022 23:12

I have been putting some shallow bowls out and paint trays. They're sloped so things can climb out.

preservesandreserves · 15/08/2022 09:08

Paint trays are a great idea and we have quite a few in the cupboard gathering dust when they should be being used ha!

I have two water baths outside which are those large plant pot saucers, one has large gravel in the bottom that the sparrows seem to favour drinking from and the other has gravel only on one side and the blackbirds and sparrows bath in that. The bloody pigeons sit in that hogging it. I put water in it any time it looks like it is going down.

Before a fox came and chewed the cable one of them was a self filling water bath with a solar pond pump. Lots of videos on YouTube on how to do this. The saucer has holes drilled in one for the little spray thing and another for the overflow to return water back into the bottom. We will be making another one.

DownNative · 15/08/2022 10:37

Just seen a Robin bathing in our bird bath and a blue tit flitting around this morning. Haven't seen blue tits for ages!

It really pissed down yesterday, so there's loads of water everywhere here.

Lonelycrab · 15/08/2022 11:09

I use an old paint tray and the birds love it. Bloody pigeons always in there having a bath so have to change it regularly. I’ve been putting my phone out on time lapse to get some close up shots. Here’s a lovely blue tit.

Rain due at some point to day, hopefully that is. Absolutely desperately need it here, Hampshire.

can anyone water the wildlife with me?
Discovereads · 15/08/2022 11:11

Yep, I do this too. Fresh water put out every day in the shade for local wildlife and also the neighbour’s cats pop by for a drink as well.

Gilead · 15/08/2022 11:33

We have a shallow dish with stones which is refreshed every day. Any fruit ‘on the turn’ goes out for forahering animals, there’s currently a melon at the back being enjoyed by butterflies etc.

ABrotherWhoLooksLikeHellMugYou · 15/08/2022 11:57

I've got a couple of small pet dishes at the front for the hedgehogs and a large enamelled cast iron paella dish full of water and some big stones at the back for bird and insect. Only ever seen froggies in it though!

hattie43 · 15/08/2022 12:05

I always put water out , 2 bird baths and various bowls of water for the foxes and anything else that passes by .

onmywayamarillo · 15/08/2022 12:34

Yes we've had 3 different bowls out for days and they are drained too.

Our local farmers are all making sure there is water around for wildlife too.
