They don't hurt in the slightest. They're just all cracked and discolored. It looks fungal to me ? But no pain which I'd have thought if it was some kind of infection there would be other signs with it...
They grow but very slowly. I was hoping the cracks would just grow out but no, more just appear as the nail shaft moves up.

I used to do my own gel nails at home and the gels on my toes would obviously stay on the longest, could it be from that? My fingernails are fine though and it's not even all my toes!
Btw the black stuff on the left one is old nail polish that won't come off due to seeping into the cracks

Sorry to anyone who doesn't like feet

Yep, fungus.

KangarooKenny · 14/08/2022 08:36

I’ve got it and it’s just a vertical white line on two toenails. I think it’s from having Shellac, so I only paint them when necessary now , and remove it as soon as possible.

Hi Op

I personally find that if I constantly paint my toe nails be it gel polish done at salon or do it myself nail polish at home over a long period my nails become very brittle once I no longer have polish on them could it be that?

It might however be best to seek advice from pharmacist just to rule out any fungal infections but I would also suggest trying nail strengthener nail polish/treatment you can sometimes buy nail stuff to help with brittle nails.
I would defiantly give the nail polish a break for a while

I haven't painted them for months now and thought it might help so they can breath and try and air my feet at home all the time but it hasn't helped

That looks fungal to me

Dontwakeme · 14/08/2022 09:01

Get a nail treatment fr
chemist, paint on daily. No polish going forward and it will clear. Mine where the same and took about 6months , was basically from having gel polish on all the time! I now rarely paint my toe nails and when I do I take the polish off after a week and give them a break

ChloeHel · 14/08/2022 09:11

Pharmacist here! That’s fungal. Pop to your local pharmacy and ask for some amorolfine! Can take 6-12 months to clear up.

If all nails are affected I would also book an appointment with your GP just to rule out any other underlying conditions.

ThomasinaGallico · 14/08/2022 09:12

Fungal nails are a bugger to treat. By all means, try a paint-on nail treatment at the pharmacy to begin with (a talk to a pharmacist is a very good idea) but don’t be surprised if you end up needing oral antifungals on prescription. My DH needed them for six months.

Lilgamesh2 · 14/08/2022 09:14

You can also try tee tree oil.

VanGoghsDog · 14/08/2022 09:16

Yep, fungal. Impossible to clear up with OTC drugs, see the GP and they'll send off a sample to check what type, then prescribe.

I'd had it for years, the tablets took 6m to clear it, so six prescriptions, c£60, but worth it. You do have to have three blood tests during the treatment to check your liver function.

Oh, and the GP said if I didn't like the way it looked I could paint them. Contrary to being told not to. I didn't though because it felt wrong.

Dontwakeme · 14/08/2022 09:52

theres a polish u can buy called nailer that u can use while you are treating them.let’s the nail breath

Thank everyone! I will probably leave it for now as I'm nearly 32 weeks pregnant but it'll definitely be something to sort after !! They're so unsightly it's embarrassing wearing sandals etc !

Just a thought, I've been diagnosed with gestational diabetes this pregnancy, i heard diabetics can have recurrent issues with toenails. Could it be related?

Yes that’s why I said to go to the GP to check for underlying conditions as diabetes is known to cause fungal infections. But they look like they’ve been infected for quite some time, so probably not be caused by the gestational diabetes but it won’t be helping.

But yes, if you are pregnant don’t use the amorolfine, wait until after. Hope it clears.
