Tiled living room floor?

I have 4 dogs and teenagers.

My floor was last done about 15 years ago. Laminate flooring. It's an absolute state now from 4 puppies and 15 years of kids.

100% can't do carpet, reluctant to do laminate again as it's water damaged in so many places from dog pee (2 are elderly now so expect lots more accidents) and I have vinyl rolls.

Have been looking at tiles but I know it's usually for much warmer countries, but it would be so practical to clean!

Would I be mad to do it?

If you can lay underfloor heating at the same time then go for it! Otherwise maybe that modern lino stuff m’n is so fond of, I forget the name. It’ll probably have been suggested by the time I post TBH, apparently it’s fab.

We have Karndean vinyl tiles throughout our downstairs, I love them.

Underfloor heating would be an idea. You can get floor tiles that look like wood planks.

I don't think I can lay underfloor heating. Am in HA property and wouldn't have the budget.

Was thinking I could do cheap rugs over winter, clean and store them over summer. The dogs don't tend to pee on the rugs but the floor itself

With elderly dogs it will be too much of a slip hazard unless you are literally going to have rugs all over with no gaps .

I've seen a lot of tiled living rooms on Rightmove lately so people do it.
If they have underfloor heating I don't know but rugs will work.

They have zero mobility issues, they just pee alot 🙄

Tiles will be way too cold in the winter.

vinyl? There are some lovely ones around these days.

I believe once you take into account grout and installation tiles (ceramic) are very expensive.

We have vinyl tiles all through downstairs. HA property and they were here when we moved in. We did put carpet down over them originally, but 4 kids and cats ruined that . The tiles are easy to clean and I can't say we notice them being much colder, just wear slippers in the winter if you need to. Only thing we did in regard to the dog was put a runner along the hallway, but that was because he liked to zoom and slipped doing handbrake turns into the living room.

Tile floors are quite popular here in Australia. I’m not a fan. They’re really uncomfortable to stand on and cause leg and foot pain. If you can’t heat them they’ll be freezing in winter even with rugs. Not comfortable for elderly dogs either.

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 14/08/2022 07:36

I wouldn't do tiled floors with elderly dogs in the house. They may not be struggling now but through work, I've seen lots of old dogs really struggle on tiled floors as there's just no grip whatsoever; and it's really not not nice to see them unable to get up comfortably and easily.

I would go for laminate tiles.
